city fanzines....

What was the name of the young bird who used to work in the souvenir shop, now she was ok!

I agree with you Eds about "old" being a top bloke, but this has been a top thread and have quite enjoyed the fanzine war memoirs. In fairness, the only real slagging off has been by the ex-editors themselves.

ps Does anybody remember Louise who used to sell kotk, a very tasty piece one thought.

louise burgess ? very very average mate !

I always thought she was tasty, or is my memory playing tricks. It couls also be that my teenage fantasies weren't all that

Louise Burgess was a mate of mine from University and is now Louise Deeks and lives along way from Manchester. Her brother Richard is a successful journalist, also a KK contributer once being MEN's City reporter.

I would say she was slightly above average, but as she was City mad, she was fit as!

I can't believe anyone who read the fanzines is unaware of the argie-bargie going on at the time, it certainly came across in the editions of the period . First it was Electric Blue v Blueprint, then Electric Blue vs This Charming Fan, then Bert Trautmann's Helmet vs King of the Kippax. There may be a common denominator in that lot ! All added to the entertainment in my opinion.

I am sure Noel originally came from Wythenshawe/Baguley area. The top and bottom of all this is that Noel/BTH is a top bloke and a big blue and although there are obviously people on here who didn't see eye to eye with him decades ago I always thought of him as a sound bloke. That said everyone is entitled to their opinion but I would say don't use this forum to slag people off. Sort it out face to face or not at all!

Well said that man. (as above)
I have only heard of the name Phil Gatenby and have never met him but by all accounts he is a loyal Blue. I have met Noel on a number of occasions and indeed stood next to him as he sold outside the rags ground whilst the 13yr old mibs gobbed off at him. I have my own views on Dave Wallace who took a dislike to me but so what, I will just say FFS remember we are all Blues.

What I do not agree with and I am not impressed with, is so called 'posters' who register under a false name aka blueprintreader and then shout it loud. We can all be 'dead hard' on one post under a false name but this post started out, like most on here as genuine. It has now got hijacked by people who hide behind balaclavas and masks. That is a shame.

(Besides which C.T.I.C was the best fanzine end of.)

I've got a boot in both camps here.

One of my mates goes for a jar up from Bridge Street every Friday.
Another of my mates walks down Bridge Street for a jar on Friday.

I don't think Noel is a twat. I don't know him well enough.
In fact, our mutual friend speaks very highly of him.

Yet personally, I know Dave is a diamond.
Not on heresay. Personal experience.

As I said, boot in both camps.
Firmly planted with Dave Wallace (or King of The Kippax). That's the reason for the bad blood.

Can ANYONE accuse DW of being a bully boy?

Whereas you Noel, well it seems a bit of a trait.
Mud fkn sticks.

While Noel is taking a fair bit of stick on here, and I cannot vouch for anything claimed on here as "I wasn't there"... I do understand that things cut both ways and nobody is innocent.

I'm sure Noel, as a fanzine editor, knows better than most what actually happened between the various participants far more than those not in the loop.

Allegedly.

Let's get things straight here on several points from several posters:-

I've always accepted that if you put yourself up you're going to be shot at eventually and occasionally and being the editor of a fanzine is no different. I also accept that nobody can be everyone's friend, everyone has supporters and detractors and I'm no exception. This romantic notion that a lot of people cling to with religious fervour that "we're all Blues together" holds no water and is just that: a notion. Therefore, some people (admittedly some, if maybe not, all of my mates) think I'm a decent enough bloke; others thinks I'm Satan's own spawn (people who've never met me mainly but, again, some of my mates probably!). Now I might not be everyone's cup of tea and I accept that. Sadly, some people's egos are so big they can't quite get over this. However, I can tell you that if, as I did, you stand in the same spot at Maine Road for 14 years, everyone recognises you and thinks they know you and many, many people - rightly or wrongly - have got an opinion about you, as we have seen on this thread in spades. Again, as has already been pointed out, I don't know most of the people who've posted on this thread; because I don't recognise their screen names or know who they belong to or simply because I don't know them anyway.

Also, some people have used this thread to settle old scores, which they could have addressed many years ago, and in person, but chose not to. I have to agree with Eds that, "everyone is entitled to their opinion but I would say don't use this forum to slag people off. Sort it out face to face or not at all!" and Bluemist: "What I do not agree with and I am not impressed with, is so called 'posters' who register under a false name aka blueprintreader and then shout it loud. We can all be 'dead hard' on one post under a false name but this post started out, like most on here as genuine. It has now got hijacked by people who hide behind balaclavas and masks. That is a shame." Of course, the invisible enemy can never reveal itself.

On Blue Punter's point: "Can ANYONE accuse DW of being a bully boy?"

No, but that's only because Dave always operated very differently - well, well under the radar. His MO was usually via private and often poisonous correspondence rather than printing anything that was even mildly critical, whereas I told it and printed it publicly as I saw it; whether it was critical or non-critical it didn't really bother me either way, so for all the interest this thread may have attracted, for me at least it has been nothing more than a storm in a teacup. For what it's worth, I used to photocopy Dave's bile and pass it around The Bee Hive before home matches where they often caused mirth and shock in equal measure.

I know for a fact that Dave paid one of his critics a little visit on at least one occasion after receiving a critical letter - funnily enough somebody from BluePrint (MR) was at the address on the day of the visit! It seemed pretty funny to me at the time and Dave too, for what it's worth. And on another occasion I actually dissuaded him from paying my mate, "little" Phill {sic}, a similar visit over an anonymous poison pen letter. We were at the ticket office buying Liverpool away tickets at the time and Dave was comparing the anonymous letter with one that Phill had sent him in happier times. He seemed to think they were written by the same hand; I didn't.

That will be denied, of course, and I'll be accused of being a liar again, no doubt on one carefully censured and controlled site, but if it isn't true then I'm happy for God to strike me down with a bolt of lightning.

Regarding Phill's repetition of his original post, again I'll refer you to my earlier response - which I'll stand by all day long. With regard to another of his assertions, I asked a mate of mine yesterday who hasn't - incidentally - seen this thread but has met Phill how tall he reckoned he was. He ventured that he was getting on for six foot. He might not be as tall as that but I don't recall him being little at all. For the record, and to answer SWP's back's question, I'm 6'2" - or at least I was when I was measured at Bootle Street nick, but that was a long, long time ago and I may have shrunk a bit since.

With regard to "blueprintreader's" bilious bilge, I'll respond to that separately, when I get round to it.

Finally, it's a shame that this thread has ventured off course and I think it should now be renamed City's Fanzine Wars. But for all the hundreds of trees that were sacrificed and the millions of words that were printed on them, hardly anyone recently has celebrated City's fanzines for what they actually were. But for anyone who is interested, the best article I ever read was in Tom Ritchie's City 'Til I Cry which compared attendances at City to those at other clubs. By chance I met the bloke who penned it in the pub one time; "that was the one article I wish I'd published," I told him.

Decent response that Noel.

Only those present at the time will know what actually hapenned. I'd be a bit upset myself if third parties started started throwing allegations about.

As I said earlier, I don't know you Noel. But a friend who's opinion I value highly speaks very well of you.

Given the interest this thread has generated, perhaps there's an opportunity to get something in print?

I think it would make a great read. Not sure who'd be in editorial control. Henry Kissinger would have his work cut out.

Noel
OK Noel, let me put the question to you differently.
Please tell eveyone ''why did I assault your girlfriend''.
I would love to read your interpretation as to why I ''assaulted'' your girlfriend.

I refered to myself as ''little Phill'' for the following reason. Firstly I am 5 foot 10. Not short by any means, but back in the days we are referring to I was about 9 stone. You are, what, over 6 foot and maybe then about..... well I wouldnt like to say..... lets just say you had at least half my weight, maybe more over me.

Anyway, forget that, please enlighten us all as to why I assaulted your girlfriend. I'm off to Asda for a bit of shopping, so look forward to the reply when I get back, i'll even by some pop corn as it could be a good story.

You are missing the point here Noel. You were a bully back then. You had already thumped me once and instigated a scuffle with a friend of mine as I have already outlined here. So you really expected me to approach you at the time to have a polite discussion about your bullying behaviour towards me?
*shakes head*
