Corners

Surely they should be in-swinging as well? That was you've got the attacking players running on to them and the defenders on the back foot.

I much prefer to see us take inswingers, but didn't our analysts persuade Mancini that outswingers are statistically more successful? Seem to recall that from our title winning season under Roberto, could be wrong though.

Interestingly, I work with a guy who plays in defence, he much prefers to defend inswingers, reckons it's easier to attack the ball. I've always thought that it's better if the ball is bending in towards the goal, only needs the slightest touch then….?

Either way, drives me mad when a corner doesn't clear the 1st defender.

Doesn't matter if they are inswinging or outswinging. It's all about winning the header and if you miss the first defender and keep it from the keeper then you have a chance.

In terms of attacking I'm with you 100%. However out swingers can be dangerous if the team your playing against is good on the counter attack, the angle gives them a good opportunity to break. I wouldn't use this against the likes of Chelsea for instance.

The critical thing is the pace on the ball and as you say missing their first man.....We have to improve on Davids floated ball over though, it offers us nothing!!

Tim Howard has said definitely that inswingers are more dangerous. You still have to put it in the right place - too close to the goalie and it's no use of course. But I wouldn't overload either way. Mix it up and keep the opposition guessing. I also liked the variation Milner has tried a couple of times where he plays it out to someone on the edge of the box for a shot. Fernandinho scored a cracker last season against (I think) Fulham with that. And we almost got one against Villa just before half time.

Yet last season we scored most goals from corners in the prem I think

Makes it even more annoying.....

Its the price you pay. Its the ones that only just clear the first man that are the most dangerous.

Its a bit like tennis. The best servers serve the most lets. Because they're trying to only just clear the net.

Whoever coaches our players at corners and set pieces is incredibly lucky to be still in a job. We are shocking at them. 11 more of them today and again nothing from them. Yaya needs to take a few. He might whip them in with pace. If we are without the individual brilliance of Kun for any length of time we have to be less wasteful in this area.

I think ever since Hughes took over and all the way through Mr M and now Mr P we have scored far more than our fair share from corners but we do seem to have hit a bit of a brick wall (or in our case the defender in front of the near post !) these last few games.

They were terrible today and have been poor for a number of weeks.

Defending them though is another matter. We haven't let a single goal in yet in the League this season from a set piece. Very impressive.

Just remember we are great at defending them! Haven't let in a single goal from corners in premier league this season.

Nevermind, already mentioned the post above..

It's the monotonous nature of a little dinked in ball to the near post over and over. Teams must have watched true games back from last season against us and they will all know exactly what's coming every single time.

There's no diversity in any of them. No short corners, no change-up in the swinger direction, none to the penalty spot, none to the edge of the box, rarely do we get one to the far post (we had one today, was probably just an over hit), none are ever driven in hard...just the same little floaty dink to the same area every time.

Heard the ex-Scottish manager, Craig Brown, on the radio recently, and he mentioned that a mere one in forty-one corners leads to a goal.

Yeah I heard a statistic like that as well. So very likely the "problem" we have with them is more a function of the low probability of success to begin with.

The law of averages tends to even out though. We're due for a good patch of results off corners I'm sure.

We only score well from corners statistically because our players are tall and we have a lot of goalscorers. With Yaya, Vinny, Mangala and Dzeko most teams would lead the league is scoring from corners. Also we get loads of them because we dominate possession and put pressure on the other team.

Our corners are no threat 90% of the time.

I have been whinging for fuck knows how may years ref our formation when defending a corner.
I have lost count at the number of times we had 11 men back, defending only 5 men in our penalty area, which equates to 4-2 in favour of our opponents.
Why don`t we have one man up front to take away at least another 3 spare men ??
Unbelievable Jeff !!!
Does my fooking head in !!

Corners are a lottery and not many teams take real advantage as a set piece, though it would be better if we could get the ball into the right area each time. With respect, Nasri should not be allowed any where near taking a penalty. But my concern is our lack of invention for Free kicks. Last season, Yaya was on fire for those, but it just seems to be the case of smash it and see what happens. It could be a vital aspect of our armoury but is sadly lacking at the moment.

Really bored of seeing the ball fall on to the head of the first defender at the near post every single time. I'm certain they are being put there because they are instructed to with the intention being the front man (usually Kompany) flicks the ball on into the box. It obviously doesn't work so why the hell hasn't it been either worked on or changed in training? Size wise we have some big players that could pose a big threat from corners, and they can be especially useful when we're struggling to break defensive teams down, we should be banging a few of them in. Teams will soon be that confident they can easily deal with our corners you'll probably see teams doing what used to happen against stoke in the Rory Delap era where they prefer to give away a corner than a throw in

So we should be scoring from one every 2 to 3 games.

Let's face it. We're bad at attacking corners.

Although, it's all swings and round abouts. I don't expect Pellegrini to be perfect at every aspect of management but it is still a flaw in our game atm.

IIRC, we topped the table for goals from set pieces or corners in the PL (or close to it) under Mancini. Now, we're camping happily in the relegation zone.

It is a little frustrating though because it shouldn't be that hard an issue to address.

Someone said that the guy who coaches our corners is lucky to have a job. Well, I honestly don't think anyone has that job. Pelligrini probably thinks their time is better spent elsewhere. It's easier to say: everyone knows the drill. We do a flick on at the near post. Now let's go work on some tiki taka.
