Corners

I'd make the regular corner takers line up in training tomorrow on the goal line whilst the rest kick the ball at them 200 times, just to let them know how the nearest man to our corners feels.

The problem I have is that I am scratching my head as to who in the team is able to take a decent corner.

Kolarov has ability but isn't in the team, Merlin and Navas are not producing the goods at the moment, Milner possibly but he is in and out of the team, neither of the Ferns can do it, Nasri is a possibility but is injured. In other words the options are very limited.

I think I would start by abandoning the out swingers. So I would switch Navas or Milner to the other side to take corners, which means Merlin has to take them from the other side. I know it's ancient history but when Edin scored against QPR to make it 2-2 in the title season, it was from an inswinging corner from Silva.

Ironically we have the players that CAN score from corners. Vinny, Demichelis, Dzeko and even Mangala are very good in the air. The ball is simply not getting to them. I know it's a well worn debate but I think they have more chance of scoring from an inswinging corner.

The other alternative is to always play the short corner. At least then we have control of the ball.
I agree with you these out swingers are a joke, just end up being hopeless floaters in to the air which are piss easy for the opposition to deal with. when Lampard came on was screaming for him to take the corners, he has an amazing delivery.

Sorry if this has been mentioned.

We can't practice them. Otherwise, we'd know who was taking them. That was a shambles before, Clichy, Jovetic taking them because no ownership was taken.

Our organisation at most set pieces is very poor, it is hard to believe we practice taking corners and free kicks or defending free kicks. I have seen non league teams better organised at these than we are. Our coaching staff do not not seem to be paying enough attention to what could be match winning drills.
Also the occasional shot inside the box would be good.

Did look very amateurish.

Why Lampard doesn't take them when on, God only knows.

Otherwise should be Silva and Nasri from right and left respectively. Navas should never be allowed to take another as long as he's at the club.

As bad as our delivery is, we're also crap at attacking the ball in the air (in both areas, in fact)

It's getting beyond a joke now it really is

You really mean to say that there isn't a professional footballer at our club who can take a decent corner?

I am not exaggerating here but I could swing one in better than the deliveries we have been sending into the box recently

Floating it up in the air hoping one of our players gets lucky is not the answer

Needs to be whipped in and beat the first man

Not rocket science is it!

My personal favorite one yesterday was the one where everyone ran to the 6 yard box and Navas stuck it behind them all (but fairplay for beating the first man for once Jesus)

£150mill spent on a trianing academy, and we still can't take corners properly.

They mustn't work on it plus our dead ball situation in the opposition half is pass it to a player left or right 2 yards away! Even Arsenal sticks it in the box when they and a free kick just inside our half oh and they scored from it too..

For what it's worth, this is the problem as I see it:

1. Not enough pressure on the opposition goalie, who often has a free run at the inswinging corners
2. Not enough desire from out big men to get to the ball - some of them are wimping out in my opinion. The same can be said about them when they are defending corners.
3. Not enough variety - need to throw in some unuual ones to keep the opposition guessing. I'm not usually a fan of short corners, but as the strikers are so short, that is surely the way to go. God knows, we get enough of them to mix it up a bit.

Surely they will be working at it - and not just practicing more of the same. A good kick up the backside of some of our' giraffes' is requied if you ask me.

I'm sure I read a stat that last season we scored the highest number of goals from corners in the league, or have I dreamt it?

I think that's right. 14 IIRC. It'd take us about 2000 corners to get that at the moment.

So how the f have we gone from the best in the league to the worst?

Edited to add: Actually, I think it's because navas is getting more game time and therefore taking more corners. Shame

To be fair, Nasri takes most of our corners when fit...he's shite at them too

And didn't Silva go through a spell of taking particularly shit corners a few weeks ago?

Yesterday we played arsenal, has no one at our club been watching them at all this season? They zonal defend every corner which means ALL their players were in or around the 6 yard box.
What we needed to do rather than lumping it in the midst of 11 of their men was play it to the edge of the box where there were 2 or 3 of our players unmarked, who could at least have had a pop.

What you mean our vast team of video analysts didn't spot this? you'll be telling me they can't figure out how many goals it will take to win a group next! Or a team of medics with the latest methods can't stop us getting a thousand soft tissue injuries every fucking season!! How about a bloke with a notepad a pen go and watch the opposition for a few games prior to playing them?

Seems to me when you make a simple game complicated you make more problems for yourself. By the way you are spot on mate! Want a job?

Because MDM is not flicking them on like he did on a regular basis last season
