Coronavirus (2021) thread

The Guardian reporting that AZ production in Belgium has hugely ramped up but they also have a piece detailing how hardly anyone in Germany wants it. Hopefully Germany, France and others have successfully undermined it with their populations so we can have their supplies.

The last bit isn't a serious point but I do believe that many countries have shot themselves in the foot with their attitude towards the AZ vaccine.
I agree that some Countries seem to be shooting themselves in the foot. FWIW my mate who is a care worker in Holland got the Oxford / AZ jab yesterday. He had been due to get the Pfizer vaccine on 8th January IIRC. It seems they Pfizer haven’t been able to meet EU expectations in terms of quantities delivered but there isn’t an agenda to criticise Pfizer.

I am a bit sceptical myself but it was evident that photographers were exaggerating how busy the beaches were by using long angle pics. Reporters on the ground said that social was being complied with from what they could see.

There was a massive pile on against the people who went to the beaches but we don’t know their circumstances eg did they live in flats or have garden to take in the sun etc. the holier than thou crowd tried to compare beach goers with big house parties that carried far greater risks from Covid.
I spent 3 separate weeks visiting pubs in Cornwall and Devon in July and August; cases barely moved down there till schools returned.

But many of the older publicans weren't happy about opening up. They resented people enjoying themselves on the beaches despite all the evidence that being outside reduced risk. Personally I never saw people bunched up and the pubs themselves followed the Covid rules to the letter, sometimes painfully so.

England cases Wednesday to Wednesday in 2021

62, 322 v 47, 525 v 38, 905 v 25, 308 v 19, 202 v 13, 013 v 12, 718 Today

The plateau that has been showing up in the data for days now and I have been commenting on is very obvious in these week to week numbers.

Zoe App was accurate again though - within a few hundred and showed the rise.

As an as yet unvaccinated 56 year old I would prefer that children get back to school as soon as possible

As a society we are seem to be incredibly blasé regarding the long term social and economic consequences of denying millions of children the opportunity of a decent education.
Obviously children are the priority, you can see they're suffering badly. I'm not suggesting that we put my interests before schools.

But we shouldn't be surprised if, as in September, it produces another spike in cases and unpredictable long-term consequences for children and parents.

It's a trade-off.

Czechs are trying to negotiate with AZ for more vaccines but apparently EU are trying to block them from making private agreements as all has to come through the EU.

Considering the country has current infection numbers not far off the UK, despite being about 7 times smaller, and has managed under 500,000 total vaccinations in 2 months due to not having enough supplies from the EU, it all seems a bit petty really.

Think even in normal times people on a beach don’t sit much less than 2 metres from strangers, so a beach may look crowded but when you take into account being outside and probably breezy I can believe it didn’t cause much transmission when cases were low anyway.
Think a bigger issue would have been in the shops and cafes near the beaches.

For another thread but as a staunch brexiter this just totally reaffirms how delighted am i to be out.

The whole UK was near or below 1000 for the whole of June, July and August last year.

Germany, with a higher population was considerably lower for quite a long time.

Without vaccines.

I'm going to guess we were testing considerably less though? Feel free to correct me there but it feels like everyone is being tested all the time these days for various reasons. Certainly feels different compared back to then. If we test shit loads, surely we'll naturally find a lot more?

Edit - yeah its miles different. We would have way over 1k cases a day back then if we had this testing capacity I reckon. How on earth do we genuinely get below 1k regularly

Absolutely this - get the teachers vaccinated as well and give the kids a chance to actually have a childhood and future before it's too late for many
