Mixed bag on the wider vaccine front. Malta, Portugal and Denmark have hit the 70% threshold, Eastern Europe lagging by some margin.

WALES DATA

1 death - was 2 last week

2389 cases - was 1480 last week - highest during the current wave close to the peak in the January wave. There have been two recent higher numbers but both were on Mondays when TWO days data is reported. This is a single day and up over 60% on last week.

13.8% positivity - was 11.4% last week

THERE WERE 211 patients and 31 Ventilated in Wales as of yesterday

This is a fascinating graph someone on line has created. It shows very clearly the difference in this wave due to the vaccines versus the last wave peak in January

The BLUE line atop is the number of cases day by day.

The ORANGE line is a time skewed admissions to show the cases that translate into hospital admissions.

The GREY line is the number of deaths. Also time skewed for the lag that occurs in patients.

In the last wave the three were closely aligned. Now far less so.

Easy to see what some of us here have been trying to explain in words. The vaccines are why this wave is VERY unlike the previous ones.

No idea how statistically valid it is. Others can comment on that but it looks a good thing to show to vaccine doubters as it screams out how well they work in a way numbers alone posted every day cannot do.

That graph suggests towards the end of May was the point where the link broke between deaths and cases.

Was that when we protected the most vulnerable. I think pretty much all over 70 had had two jabs by then?

A ZOE app study shows cases have risen by 19% over the past 7 days. And for first time in a while all three measures - cases, hospitalisations and deaths are rising in tandem. Though deaths at the lower level as on that graph above.

Their study shows the highest % of new cases is in the 18 to 35 age group and the second most in all children under 18.

This is exactly what the 7 day Stats for cases for Northern Ireland has been showing with slightly different age range coverage there.

ZOE also found that 30% of those who test positive have been double jabbed. But of course most of them will not become hospital patients.
