Coronavirus (2021) thread

Studies have shown this since the SARS-CoV-1 outbreak nearly 20 years ago. In East Asia, it’s been common to wear masks in the Winter. Lots of East Asians were wearing masks here in Britain during the big 2017-18 Winter of influenza.

More widespread evidence has shown they work against the spread of SARS-CoV-2, like you’ve shown there, yet still people won’t wear them.

Some people still think they’re for protecting yourself from contracting the virus when they’re actually for protecting other people. It’s just simple courtesy for others to wear them, I’ve worn them since February 2020 and will contunue to do so.

from discussions on here there are a lot of ranging misunderstandings. cant recall who but 1 person discounted masks as useless, as even though they knew droplet transmission was one of the main vectors of transmission they thought droplet transmission was surface transmission.

Looks like a lot of the European plan B-type countries are now struggling with a surge in cases, whilst the UK meanders on at a much lower level.
There were plenty of smart arses in here demanding we change our approach to follow theirs, not too long ago.
Too early to call that one yet mate for Western European countries until they've been through their surge phase.
We've been plague Island for the last few months so they've got a lot of 'catching up' to do!

For a bit of context.

1) A lot of the limitations are funding based, the pot of money for Covid was pretty much bottomless removing the overheads
2) A lot of the vaccine work for the Covid vaccines are working with existing technologies that speed up the process as they have already been through trials. AZ/J&J and the Russian vaccine all use a similar system like this, more traditional
3) For mRNA vaccines. while these are new to the market, they have been in development since around 1980, A lot of work was carried out to allow for the vaccines to be made.

the only phase of the trials that were accelerated artificially was phase 2 and 3 trials were carried out at the same time. its entirely valid to do but unprecedented as there has never been the funding or desire to do it before now.

Really disappointed with the 'mandatory mask wearing' on London transport (TFL) on a visit last weekend.

I'd say a lot less than 50 % wearing a mask.

For those who don't believe the narrative, here's the narrative telling you to believe the narrative. Checkmate.
That's not any sort of response to empirical research. Talking about narratives in such a way is just a cliche, a meme.

Pretentious and intellectually bereft.

The whole mask thing will never work in this country, the idea behind the masks is to stop you from spreading it, not stop you from catching it.
And unfortunately in this country the new "im alright fuck everyone else" generation just dont get it.
Think there should have been clearer guidance on the whole mask thing, the amount of times ive been told in shops that my kids dont have to wear them is crackers, yep they dont have to, but I would prefer them not to be spreading a virus because they cant be arsed

Goodness me. Sad to hear it continues. You must be pulling your hair out.

Have you had a consultant or doctor keep an eye on how you are progressing, or not, as it seems?

Once I started running again (a month or so back) I finally felt I was back on track, albeit not fully & I still had coughing bouts.

This current infection is horrid though.
I’ve not stopped coughing for nigh on five days (like really violent, puke inducing coughing).

Take it easy.

Could easily be something new. There's plenty of respiratory issues flying around schools. Seemingly more than usual. I would think with what you went through, you may well have had some damage that will take time to heal.

Oh - apologies- I probably wasn’t clear. This is definitely a new bug - my daughter had the same a week or so before me - took about 2 weeks for her to get over the worse.

Just think it’s been exacerbated by my long wrestle with covid/long covid.

I am resting mate - little I can do atm. It’s floored me.
Thanks.

I find the covid news coming out of Europe utterly depressing. It just goes to show there is no easy solution or way out of this misery. Its going to be with us all for years.

It will never work because the get out clause of "I'm exempt" exists. Legally that cannot be challenged at source, in spite of video's everywhere of even police officers doing so in shops etcetera at the peak of the pandemic. In Spain it is still strictly enforced and you have to produce a doctor's certificate if you don't wear one.

Just to cheer locals up a bit Some better news on the numbers today. North West actually fell both day to day and week to week and Greater Manchester was up just 4 day to day and down around expectation by 46 week to week.

So the rises today were not rooted in the region. They come from other parts of England.

The South East had over 7000 cases alone - not far off double the North West.

Full details on the data thread during the evening when I have time to post it there.

Sorry for posting this here tonight. Will not be a daily occurrence. Just if something significant changes.

They’ve just shut our uni down again. Back to home office until at least 9th January. It’s going mental here in Austria and we’re expecting another nationwide lockdown next week.

Sorry bout that bud. I've never quite come good either, every little bug the neighbours get sets me right back on my arse, and it seems to have happened three times in six weeks now - but I know you've got it worse than me. Last night was worse because I felt it on my chest again for the first time in a couple of weeks.

Get the impression there will be a few lads around our age in this mess for some time yet so we'll at least be able to commiserate and swap stories etc.

The ones that use theb"Im exempt" bollocks are the problem, its a load of nonsense that people cant breathe with a mask on, Ive ran loads of miles wearing face coverings and it makes no difference whatsoever. But old dave who read it in the star knows much more than most, and got a special "Im exempt" sticker off ebay

Sorry to hear that too bud.
Inclined to agree that there are prolonged complications. That cough never truly went away although the light coming through with getting back into running (far slower) was welcome.

This is the second respiratory illness in around two months.
Previous to Covid back in January I hadn’t had a cold for over three years (put this down to running in all weathers & gym/healthy eating).

Bloke at work (get the impression he’s almost SAS fit) hasn’t run in over a year despite doing marathons previously.

Anyone still putting ‘long covid’ in speech marks?

Dave doesn't even need an "An I'm exempt" sticker, he just needs to say it if challenged. Under the disability act it's a crime to ask why or refuse him entry or boot him off transport.

How are you?
Had you been jabbed?

Think it’s quite random in how & who it affects. Some of us (many I should say) have been unlucky.
I probably had a huge viral load too. Took my coughing, spluttering daughter down to get tested in a car back in Jan…inevitable I got a good blast of it.
