Courtney Meppen Walter

Manchester City starlet Courtney Meppen-Walter has been charged with two counts of causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving.

The 18-year-old, who was on the bench for the Blues' Champions League clash with Ajax but has never played for the first team, will appear at Manchester Magistrates Court on February 7.

Meppen-Walter was arrested after a devastating smash on Bury New Road which took the lives of a brother and sister.

A Mercedes collided with a red Nissan Micra and killed 32-year-old Kulwant Singh, of Salford, and his sister Ravel Kaur, 37, from Cheetham Hill.

Ravel's two sons, 16 and 17, were sat in the back of the Micra and are now making a good recovery.

A 19-year-old man who was driving a grey Volkswagen Golf at the time of the collision and was arrested, was later released without charge and will face no further action.

Police Sergeant Danny Byrne, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "This has been a very complicated and sensitive investigation and we have liaised closely with the Crown Prosecution Service throughout our inquiries.

"As a result, the Crown Prosecution Service have now authorised two charges of causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving.

"I know there has been a lot of speculation and media interest in this incident, but it is now more important than ever that we do not speculate about what happened.

“This case, and the facts, will be heard before a court and it is important we respect the integrity of that legal process."

The smash happened on September 1.

City did not suspend Meppen-Walter, of Middleton Road, Blackley, who carried on playing for their reserve team and was named in their Champions League squad.

I thought Courtenay was supposed to have been let off a few weeks ago because he wasn't actually involved?

Think that they said that there was no evidence that they were racing (him and the driver of the golf)

I think the Plymouth guy was charged with death by dangerous mate and he was pissed as well. If he only got 7 then CMW if found guilty will potentially be looking at a lesser stretch.
Just a horrible case but

Luke McCormick wasn't drunk. He was over the limit from the night before and fell asleep at the wheel after just a few hours sleep.

Instinct says Meppen-Walters will do a short stretch and try and rebuild his football career afterwards.

Admitting it means he will get a lesser sentence by the judge.

I hear a lot about people changing pleas , and admitting to things that they originally claim they haven't done , in order to get a few months knocked off their sentence ..... aren't the authorities possibly 'perverting the cause of justice' even making known that they offer this sentencing 'discount' for changing a plea??

If you've done it then fair enough , you should plead guilty (in an ideal world) .... but if you're innocent then why should you have to plead guilty to get a few months off a likely jail term ?
