COVID-19 — Coronavirus

The death toll is deaths in hospital due to confirmed coronavirus. Analysis from other nations across europe is that around 50% of the deaths take place outside hospitals so reporting has to mention this otherwise they could be accused of covering up the true extent of the epidemic.

There have currently been 2,823 deaths attributed to Covid-19 the Netherlands, which initially sounds relatively positive. However, the CBS, the equivalent of the ONS in the UK, has suggested today that thousands more have died outside of hospitals. It has presumably been compiling reports and comparing the number of death certificates issued against previous years.

It's not a stupid question. Some "research" last week said it could hang around for several minutes and I posted...

Still no answer! I've not found the bluemoon epidemiologists forum yet though.
I did and put them all on ignore as they spout so much nonsense

I appreciate that there is an awful lot of it but why oh why does the BBC focus entirely on the bad news. How many times do they have to reiterate the death toll from this awful disease and then state that this doesn't include care homes. And that the figure is expected to rise. ? Of course it is going to rise, deaths are not going to stop overnight. Compare that to their reporting of the number of people who have recovered or who are asymptomatic? Not one mention in the last hr that I have noticed. Click bait journalism at its worst with absolutely no balance.

Oh I forgot they have just mention Boris Johnson is recovering.

What balance do you want out of curiosity? That some people are asymptomatic isnt current news. We knew this a couple of months ago. We still don't know how many are asymptomatic here so they can't report on that. There isn't much good news to grab onto right now so you're gonna have to just deal with it sadly mate.

We aren’t recording recoveries, as a nation. Our recoveries figure currently stands at “N/A”.

Plus I’d always rather be told the cold hard truth, no matter how bad or relentless it is.

I can make and take the positives of things in my own mind.

Thanks x ,that is a useful read for everybody actually

The recovery from being ventilated can take a long time, that is well documented and understood, the recovery from having hospital treatment but not admitted with this or just having it really badly but not seeking treatment i think is poorly understood

This goes for your lungs it wants to destroy them and is very effective at doing it

I still feel a bit breathless when i have had to go out a couple of times since and every day from going down the garden,it is obviously nowhere near the acute symptoms, that is not painful /burning like it was but it feels like you are still having a little bit of problem getting a full breath, taking a deep breath in starts me off coughing again,i had perfect lungs before and i am hoping they will recover fully,i am still on inhalers

glad you seem to be improving week by week by the sounds of things. It does seem to me that there is growing evidence that in a significant amount of cases that there is reduced lung functionality which may suggest some residual scarring in the lungs??

I suspect we are not going to get any info on this for some time as all resources are on the frontline at the moment but maybe we are looking at some form of pulmonary fibrosis here?

Assume you’ve not had any X-rays at diagnosis point or after to cross ref? Suspect fairly shortly their will be post infection support groups set up on Facebook etc where hopefully you can exchange experiences, symptoms, medication etc and suspect many may also have mental scarring on this so it will be good to talk to others in the same boat...

I am very surprised that none of the journalists had the bottle to ask Sir Patrick Vallance (PV) if he still stood by his comments about herd immunity. I suspect the questions are vetted.

If you listen carefully to PV's comments about how the UK is doing his arguments are still consistent with his herd immunity theory. For instance he said in the past that, "If you suppress something very, very hard, when you release those measures it bounces back and it bounces back at the wrong time". That thinking seems to me to underly his answers today. If there's no vaccine, and no therapeutics then it might actually be the right strategy. If that's not the case then they will have made the wrong call. I know what I think but no one can know at this stage.

Sssssssshhhhhhhh Marvin don’t let the cat out of the bag.

there are many in the uk and even on here who think you lockdown for 4 to 8 weeks and come out and that’s it , it’s gone.

If anything the BBC is far more upbeat than it was when reporting the situation In Spain.

Questions

Relaxing restrictions? Not yet

Why no plan for coming out of lockdown? At the moment it is critical to continue restrictions,we are not through the peak

Masks? Looking at new evidence all the time but not convinced yet, might change in future

Recording of social care deaths? Deaths in hosp are proven cases, faster and easier to get,ONS figures count the rest,if anywhere on death certificates include suspected covid

Will we ever know the true figure in social care ?most people who seem to have it now will likely have it,more so now than in the flu season muddling the waters

Pushed on recording on accurate cause of death in nursing homes? more testing in future (last few months cant have been accurate imo)

PPE,why cant ministers say sorry that not everybody has enough? Swerved

Schools question? Too soon, must stick to the current plan, follow the data,we are in a good place with the measures so far,be waste if we relaxed too soon, trying to keep the transmision rate to 1,if it goes above it starts to spread quickly,in the general community excluding care homes,it is about 1

Critical care beds and number of ventilators are good

Care homes again ,testing, rate of infection? 92 care homes in last 24hrs where it has been reported, public health going in and testing,13.5% of homes have infection

PPE in care homes ? Bulk drop to the areas and then it is spread around who needs it

Does gov accept they should have lock downed earlier as we look like will be having the highest death rate as a country? Not clear as you cant really compare countries,we were led by the data and the need to protect the nhs (swerved)
I don't know if this is said often enough but I for one appreciate your prezzer precis Karen. Same goes for the footy ones. Looking forward to those.

What is the mortality rate? We don’t know.
What percentage of people are asymptomatic? We don’t know.
When will we have an effective treatment? We don’t know.
When will we have a vaccine? We don’t know.
When will the lockdown end? We don’t know.
When will we have an antibody test? We don’t know.
Given that they know bugger all about this virus they’re doing quite well to keep these briefings interesting.
They aren’t interesting.
