Walker is very good no doubt, but not sure it's worth spending 45-50m on him so he can play as second-choice to Alves for two seasons and be rotated for cup games and some league games.

Thoughts on having Alves as the first-choice and then having him mentor Maffeo as the long-term solution?

I don't think we'll end up spending that much on him actually, surprisingly. Might be wrong though. It's the HG factor with Walker really. It's also not putting all our eggs in the Maffeo basket too as when Alves is done, in a year or two, we'll at least have Walker if Maffeo isnt up to scratch. Maffeo's 100% going on loan to Girona next year. I'd bet loads on it, if i was that way inclined.

Think this strengthens our hand a little in the Walker negotiations as well as being a more then able full back. Levy knew he had us over a barrel given our shortage in that area. He was willing to sell and Walker will know that. So is he willing to hold on to a player they don't want and doesn't feel wanted or does he lower his fee expectations.

I'd let him ring us now.

I must admit without having seen him play for over a year having left Barca I surmised he must be on the wane. Then I watched his performance in the CL Semi where he didn't give Monaco players who ran riot against us a kick, made three assists and scored the other of the 4 goals Juve scored he still has a lot to offer.
On a free he's a steal.

Hell no! I'd be happy with walker if we can get him at or below the £40m mark. If the thieves are demanding any more then we should immediately walk away and let them deal with an unhappy player. There are other good options at right-back.

Alves is 34 and we don't know what his fitness is going to be like over the course of the season. I understand that he looked good this last season, but at that age things can change quickly. I don't think that Maffeo is ready to play regularly at this level.

He wasn't just good this season, he was arguably the best right-back in the world this calendar year. Incredible speed, stamina and overall fitness so lumping him in with other 34 year-olds isn't fair IMO. Agreed about Maffeo, we'd be talking about him as a back-up (along with Fernandinho), not as a regular player

Bang on, we've got the upper hand now.

No question about it, he was superb this season. If he can come anywhere close to replicating that next season then this will be one hell of a signing. My worry is that performances can deteriorate quickly with players of this age. How he performed last season may not be indicative of how he will perform this season. And this, in my view, is why we need a very competent alternative. Someone who could play a majority of games, if required. We can't let our season rely on the performances of a 34 year old player.

Don't understand that, how does that benefit Juventus?
I'm surprised as i'm sure we would have given them a couple of £m. However, I think the biggest reason is there was a disagreement between the coaches and players at half time in the Champions League final. Alves was one of those who wanted to attack instead of absorbing pressure. Then add to that his wages and maybe they just think it's easier to let him go.

Do you seriously believe that will happen ? Of course it wont and Pep and Txiki have everything under control.Too much flapping going on with some people.

I didn't claim to believe that Alves would be our only choice right-back. I merely made the point that we need another competent right-back, so that we're not in a mess if Alves needs to be put out to stud.

And I`m saying that will NOT be the case.Stop fucking flapping over something that wont happen.

Who's flapping? I'm not sure that you're following the discussion. I never once said that I doubted we'd sign another right-back.

Do you seriously believe that Pep and Txiki will let this happen ? Well yes you are inferring this.
