That's a fair post, it certainly doesn't look like FSG are prepared to splash the cash.

They had splashed the cash but squandered large amounts on shite. It was like when we had Mark Hughes with what has happened with Liverpool in the transfer market. It will take more money to rectify the mistakes and as you have said they are not prepared to do that.

Have you not read the post I've quoted?

They haven't in fact splashed the cash due to the players they've sold.

Misread it. I hold my hands up sorry.

I would be astonished if its correct that he potentially cannot play in the champs league now. If it's correct they want to sell I'm surprised they even played him and risked injury buy by cup tie-ing him they've potentially cost themselves a sale/ knocked a considerable amount off the price we will be prepared to pay.

Are we certain it's correct that he could now be cup tied?

I'm not sure but it was the exact case last year with Forlan. Atletico played him against a Norwegian side in end of July end early Agust so in the same round Liverpool played now. There is one more play of round before EL group stages but Forlan only signed for Inter end of August and he couldnt play in CL for Inter. (He didnt play in the playoff round for Atletico).

Later they could register him for knockout matches from February.

If there were no changes in the rules, Agger is not going to play in CL group matches.

They are maybe trying to trick us.

No probs fella.

They have splashed cash on shite, of that there is no doubt, but the net spend isn't that big.

Surely though, in this day and age, it's practically impossible for a club like Liverpool to make a profit without chumps league?

Many clubs make massive profits by buy and selling well in the transfer market. Look at Porto. The numbers are simply incredible for a club of Porto’s size. Since the Champions League win in 2004, the club has made over €500m from player sale profits.

The new owners at Liverpool are big fans of this moneyball approach as they come from a baseball background. They are big mates with Billy Beane the guy who wrote the book. In a moneyball strategy Agger's age and injury record make him a no brainer sale.

I am thick when it comes to Footballing Finances. Still I am using my burnt prayer mat on this deal.

edit....and fuck me, but I'd love to see the proof of the 500mil profit in 8 years. Not having a go at you, but that is an incredible figure.

Its my understanding that any player who plays in the prelim games is okay to play in either the CL or Europa League for another club. Forlan was eligible to play for Inter but didn't simply because Inter forgot to register him to do so

Maybe it's not correct but did you see my post from a couple of pages ago where someone has quoted the ruling - it seems to imply he won;t be eligible if Liverpool make the group stages of the Europa.

-- Thu Aug 09, 2012 11:01 pm --

Once again....

Does this rule mean anything? From the official champs league player eligibility rules

18.07 As a rule, a player may not play in a UEFA club competition (i.e. UEFA
Champions League and UEFA Europa League, but not UEFA Super Cup) for
more than one club in the course of the same season. Exceptionally,
however, a player who has been fielded in the first, second or third qualifying
round of the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League is entitled to
play in the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League for another
club as from the group stage, provided that his former club did not qualify for
the group stage of either the UEFA Champions League or the UEFA Europa
League;

Sources say they couldnt register him because he played for Atletico and then Atletico reached the group stages (EL).

They were embarassed last summer how couldnt their lawyers spot it in the rules. It seems pretty much the same thing now.

I didn't but I thought that only applied if both clubs were in the same competition. Equally I could be talking bollocks

But Porto are in the Chumps every season?

Oh I know but that is just part of the overall revenue which makes them profitable. If you're profitable to that degree it means you can keep reinvesting adequately in the squad which in turn means you are competing each year for a CL place. Our owners seems to be of the opinion the club needs to become profitable from doing kit deals with Warrior, naming rights etc plus being smart in the transfer market.

The end goal is that those profits get reinvested. I think we're the only club outside the CL who is on the Deloitte football money League last year. We placed 9th overall. The Liverpool brand is still massively profitable. Also the new owners did do one good thing and take all debt off the club which has meant no interest repayments. They have massively lowered the wage bill. I would say after all the streamlining we are now profitable to the tune of around £20m without CL money or including a profit/loss on player sales.

I've re-quoted it mate on the previous page.

I hope someone can clarify as it would be typical City for us to not check the rules, like what happened with Forlan.

Maybe someone should email City!

Agger is a very good player, great on the ball for a CB, and any team would be happy to have him on their books. But the price has to be right and why pay over the odds for him when we have such a great pairing in VK and JL? Kolo & Micah can step in if necessary and we still have Boyata, Savic and Karim Rekik etc Or revert to 3 at the back when necessary with Zaba. If he comes, great, if not, so what? We move on to the next target.

Real test for Marwood, isnt it?:)

Lower price that's the minimum. If Marwood and his stuff know this rule.

he has recently got on his knuckles ynwa (youll never walk alone) i dont think he wants to leave liverpool to be honest.

I missed your edit. Here is the Swiss Ramble on the figures. This was from two years back which at that stage it was €350m

Just think of some of the deals they've done. They're a money making machine in the transfer market.

Pepe - Real Madrid - €30m - (Signed for €2m from Maritimo)
Lisandro Lopez - Lyon - €24m - (Signed for €3.5m from Racing Club)
Ricardo Carvalho - Chelsea - €23m
Jose Bosingwa - Chelsea - €20.5m
Ricardo Quaresma - Inter - 18.5m - (Signed for €6m from Barcelona)
Deco - Barcelona - €18m
Anderson - Man Utd - €20m - (Signed for €8m from Gremio)
Lucho Gonzalez - Marseille - €17.5m - (Signed for €6m from River Plate)
Maniche - Dinamo Moscow - €16m
Aly Cissokho - Lyon - €15m - (Signed for €300k from Setubal)
Paulo Ferreira - Chelsea - €15m
Raul Merelies - Liverpool - €12m (Signed from Boavista)
Bruno Alves - Zenit - €22m
Falcao - Madrid - €40m (Signed from River Plate €4m )

They have players this season like Hulk, Alvaro Pereira who will be sold for more massive profit. It's incredible stuff.

With FFP coming in this is all going to stop though.

Fair play to Porto they have a brilliant scouting system.

If Agger has got the tatoo done and doesn't want to leave then we shouldn't sign him. Don't want a player who is not fully committed to the club at all.
