David White appreciation thread

Still hurts seeing him miss that sitter for England.

As a kid he was an exciting player to watch. Living in Nottingham and scoring a HT against Forest made me happy for a few weeks after.

I was very very lucky enough to be shown round his medal collection and England caps whilst working for his Mum in Monton a few years back. He's slightly before my time but obviously watched him on film. His speed was absolutely frightening can only imagine what he was like to watch live.

He missed two, or Zubi saved them both - seen a lot worse.

White was slightly before my time I got all the shit years haha but still got the 91/92 season review on tape, not been able to watch it in years with not having a video player but watched it enough to know White was phenomenally fast and exciting... I'm sure it used to look like he shouted fuck off as he scored one of the goals Vs the dippers, probs just my imagination not seen it at least 17-18 years got the 94/95 review tape too! Used to watch them both... Had a City goal compilation somewhere as well with other white goals as well as the Bell, Lee & Summerbee film and probs some others.

One thing you could tell is that David White had white-hot pace was strong and aggressive for a winger, in today's game he'd defo be worth a shit ton of money bet Pep would love a young David White right now... Plus doubt we'd be bidding for Grealish even if they offer very different things.

Love this reply. Grealish is more than welcome here though a fit prime white would be an unbelievable asset in our current system

Also diet, training, boots etc have improved a lot since DW's playing day. Shame his career fizzled out due to injury. Took immense courage to go public with his abuse issues.

I remember writing on Twitter at the time when David White brought out his autobiography that, in all my 40-odd years watching City, I'd never seen a player with such a chasm between his best performances and his worst, and that in detailing the abuse he suffered as a while the book finally explained why. That got me a like from the man himself, and I still think it's true.

At his very best, he was unplayable, with even the best defences of the era failing to cope with him. At his worst, you'd barely have known he was on the pitch. But the former days significantly outnumbered the latter - in the three top-flight seasons from 1990/1 to 1992/3, he scored 57 goals in all competitions, which was a hell of a record when you consider that he frequently started on the wing rather than as a central striker.

I watched him even before he made the senior side, in the 1985/6 FA Youth Cup winning team, who were all round about the same age as I was, and then in the reserve side featuring many of the same players that won the Central League a year or two later. I recall a 5-2 win against a Liverpool second-string with several well-known players on show, and White absolutely ran them ragged.

So lots of fond memories of the man. And, yes, I do also think that a lot of fans underrated him and continue to do so.

Platt - yes
I think it had been postponed for fog (?) earlier in the season, and was on a midweek evening.

Was late getting in Villa Park that night so missed the first goal but saw all the others, great game for the travelling blues.
We got as far Walsall to a postponed Villa game on a Saturday afternoon.
So must of been the same season.
I'm sure if was off cos of snow.
We were having snowball fights on the stationery M6 that afternoon

Yes, you're right, I recall now! There was a night when many inches of snow fell in a very short time in Birmingham. There was almost no way of getting anywhere in south Birmingham, and there was a band across the country.
