Driving tour of Ireland

He's going to go through the M1 and M50 tolls most likely on the way down from Belfast to South Dublin.

M50 for sure but after that he's on the M9, no tolls there. After that it's into Cork. Nothing there either. Then if he sticks to B roads he'll be fine...

(Englishman telling an Irishman his roads system...I'm probably wrong!)

He'll hit the M1 toll passing Drogheda unless he's willing to chance the local roads, which probably isn't worth the hassle.

so thanks for all your suggestions. Our plan so far is:

Ferry to Belfast on stenaline. Has anyone experience of the larne cairnryan route and especially p and o vs Stena?
First night in Kilkenny
Second in Cork
Then killarney
Then a night in a little place half way round ring of Kerry
Then looking for a night in Dingle or thereabouts - any specific suggestions welcome?
6th night in Galway - is Galway a one night stop or is it worth two do you think?
7 th carrick on Shannon. Mrs S has ancestors from round there

That’s it so far. Any further suggestions pubs and restaurants round that itinerary very welcome. Cheers in advance.

I can highly recommend Doyles in Dingle for food. Super restaurant.
The Sea life centre whilst small is great fun. A drive through the Connor pass to the viewpoints is worthwhile as well.

Cork: The Oliver Plunkett in the city centre is a good tourist pub. for music, food and whisky. A trip up the road to the Jameson distillery is a good shout. Cork Jail is an interesting trip. Spike island (Cobh) is a fantastic day trip.
Caherdaniel in Kerry is a beautiful beach if the weather is good. Watching the sun set in Clare equally so.

A week isn't enough !!

The Plunkett is very touristy...better of in the Welcome Inn at the top of Plunkett street or the An Bodhrán half way down. Ristorante Rossini on Princess St, just off Plunkett St, is a rather nice Italian. Had the best calzone I've ever eaten in there.

If you have time in Cork take a trip out to Kinsale. It's a rather attractive little town with a couple of lovely fish and chip shops.

Did it a few years back around the same time, weather was glorious. Traveled the Wild Atlantic Way (Road) along the west coast for 2 weeks. Started in Cork and made it all the way to Donegal, no places booked, stayed in a mix of BnBs, hostels and Hotels, and stopping off in various places, no real plans, its all very scenic along this route, used a lonely planet guide as went along for recommendations.

Best for music for me - Doolin in Clare

Most Scenic Counties - West Cork, Kerry, Clare, Galway, Donegal and Antrim (east side).
This is sound advice.
If you’re already booked the first week taking round the Ring of Kerry you can continue on the Wild Atlantic Way by taking the Tarbert ferry to Killimer in Co. Clare to save time and drive along the coast taking in the Cliffs of Moher.
All the way up to Galway and Connemara. Clidfen. Leenane. West Mayo all the way to Achill Island.

Depends how much time you have but anywhere along the Wild Atlantic Way is worth it.

So, bit of a change of plan because our night in galway coincides with Galway races. As a result hotel beds are twice the price they normally are. Looking at an alternative stop that is interesting but isn’t consumed by the racing. Dingle is full. Westport looks nice. Any views?
