I've heard Tony Meola (in my opinion, the best all time American goal keeper) put on the spot many times in the last few months about goal keepers. He has the normal top few, Allison, De Gea, Ederson, Neuer, etc. He says that for what is asked of him, Ederson is the best goal keeper in the world right now. He says that there isn't a keeper on the planet that can do what he does regularly. As for straight up shot stopping, he says that De Gea is great, but if you watch closely, the majority of the saves he makes require very little work by him. Part of that is positioning, part of it is defensive tactics, and part of it is that the opposing teams generally kick it right to him. He says that if there is one thing that gets in his way it is that he tends to be a bit overly aggressive and that puts him out of position more than he would like to see, but then again you are willing to give up the odd goal for all that he brings to the side. He made the comment that if soccer gave assists like they do in hockey, he'd have 15 assists right now. I think that might be a bit high, but I understand his point. A lot of times his passing sets up somebody to make an easy pass for a goal. He also says that Ederson is so good with his feet that defenders don't even try to pressure him when he has the ball because he can make them look silly and then turn that high press into goals on the other end of the pitch.
