England vs Poland | Weds 31st March

Stones in 20 yards clear space and what does the keeper do passes 10 yards behind Stones ,then no bugger to pas to ,think Kane was having his nails polished.First half Stirling and Foden very dangerous, second half the defenders doubled up on them ,so there must have been gaps in the
Polish defence, what were the England mid-field doing.Good second goal, but, slab head still king of the “hooooof”.

Anyone else think that might have been a pen in the PL on Foden?

Mount was good but I think this game could have used Grealish and Foden in combo, they were happy to leave Mount free at times but they wouldn't be able to do that with Grealish.
Not sure if serious...

You saw the Southampton one??

Haha, ok maybe I forgot the City complex. Well if a none City player gets that kind of contact in the box in the PL we'd be looking at a pen. Not sure I want those given though.

Southgate is obviously copying how we play. He's got a few footballing defenders (Walker, Stones, Maguire, TAA, Shaw) so thinks he's cracked it.

What he hasn't thought about is that behind them they need Ederson and we have Pope, who plays like anyone else in the crowd would do if picked for England. Or we have Pickford who's slightly better with the ball at his feet but a liability and not that good. Or Henderson who's not a regular and not great with his feet.

In front of the defence we have the "walls" - Henderson and Rice who pass the ball straight back at whoever passed it to them, but with more pace and 6 inches off the ground.

Southgate can't buy a new keeper, so he's got to figure out a compromise. That's the tricky part of his job. I can tell him who the best XI English players are, but making a team is a LOT harder.

Exactly. There's a talented crop of players to choose from, but trying to play the 'City' way will not end well for this team.

It's partly why I think he needs to make a few changes @Dubai Blue

I know international football tends to favour the more conservative sides, but I do think we need to play to what we have available. We've got a decent defence, a selection of "ok" keepers who don't like playing football and lots of decent midfielders and one outstanding centre forward... I wonder if Southgate would be tempted to copy the 4-6-0?! Play Foden, Grealish, Sancho, Sterling, Bellingham and one of Henderson/Rice. TAA could possibly play the Cancelo role too.

This is the genius of Pep though, the fact I'd even consider playing without a centre forward is a mark of his impact on English football!

I’d go for....

— W.Prowse — Rice —

Rashford Foden Sterling

— Kane ——
If Henderson can show some form over the next 2 months I'd be probably go with him over Ward-Prowse. If he doesn't I'd be tempted to play 2 attacking midfielder in with Rice, maybe Foden and Mount but can't see Southgate being that adventurous.

It feels like England should be better than they are. Surely there's better than Kalvin Phillips

I think the euros team will be tonight’s team with Shaw in for Chilwell and Henderson (if fit) for Phillips

Southgate too conservative to start Grealish.
