I agree. Sometimes I don’t understand the chants coming from the south stand. We go 1-0 up and I often hear the Dzeko song. Rarely ever hear the songs people will join in with. Hey Jude for example.
no doubt I will get criticised, but as you say they lead the ground. Song choice has a big impact on that
Every singing section in every stadium in the world is every stadium’s front-man for atmosphere. They are who the rest of every stadium in the world looks to to lead the atmosphere.
But I don’t think a lot of people in our singing section understand that, and some don’t care and are just there for a sing and a laugh within their own little section and aren’t bothered about the rest of the ground. That’s up to them as well, it’s not like they’re under contract to make sure the whole stadium is singing. But it will always be the case in every stadium that the singing section leads the atmosphere.
All the quick burst-y clap-along awayday chants might sound good in the singing section, but they
never catch on around the stadium. “Edin Džeko”, “Empty Seats At Home” (when we’re at home in a full stadium?), and a number of others, have
never caught on around the stadium, and they certainly won’t in a tense 0-0.
At 0-0, even any sort of individual player songs are never going to catch on around the stadium… we have to get the CITY songs going more, and we need to get a load of new ones! Positive, uplifting, CITY songs.
Not songs about players, not songs about United or Scousers, not songs taking the piss out of ourselves, not the quick burst-y clap-along awayday chants… all those kind of songs are great to have in the back catalogue but should just be extra songs to add to a City set list for when we’re 4-0 up to add to our core City chants. But they’ve become the singing section’s core chants.
City songs have always been the songs that have caught on around the stadium, but we sing fewer and fewer of them all the time. Some have completely disappeared from our set list.
Hey Jude
City, We’re From Manchester
City ’Til I Die
We All Follow Man City, Over Land And Sea
Oh When The Blues Go Marching In
We’re The Pride Of Manchester
Even “We Live You City” is seldom sung (compared to Edin Dzeko!)
And many many more…
There are a number of them that we haven’t sung for so long that it’s take a few months of reintroducing them before the stadium gets used to singing them again. When they should be the core songs of the set list every week!
And we should be adding to these with new City chants n’all.
One thing I’ve never understood is that we are the one and only Centurions in English football history, yet we haven’t got a single song about it. Surely even something simple like “Centurions Centurions ole ole ole” (to the “Championes” chant) is something we should have been proudly belting out for the last four years?!
