Etihad Atmosphere - 2022/23

If all the singers moved to the rebuilt North Stand we could revive a Maine Rd classic from 1971, 72 seasonwhen the North Stand was terracing
We are the North Stand
We are the North Stand
We are the NORTH STAND MANCHESTER
Simple song but loud and proud.

Yesterday was a perfect example of how people who say acoustics don't matter, have no idea what they're talking about.

I absolutely believe we have a lounder fan base than Chelsea, given we always outsing them at Wembley.

Yesterday however, the sound Chelsea made in SS3 completely engulfed the stadium, and the sound we made in SS1 could barely be heard.

I'm sure if you were in SS1 the atmosphere sounded amazing, as they were singing constantly, however the Chelsea lot were far louder and that's purely because of acoustics.
The acoustics stops being a problem when the rest of the stadium join in but they won’t join in with the songs that the south stand sing. It’s a catch 22 which is solved in bigger matches when the south stand upper lead the singing.

As soon as I heard that “Follow follow follow” song a few games ago and I knew it would affect the atmosphere and it has.

in 121 you couldn't hear a peep from chelsea, wouldn't have known they were there if it wasn't for the piss taking aimed at them second half from below

I can't be alone in thinking the atmosphere is perfectly fine this season. We have a ball around the lower reaches of Aisle 117. Top people, sing our hearts out. We can hear the singing section perfectly well. Love the "follow follow" song, for which there is no excuse for anyone not to join in.

Yes, we're not perfect and we have a daft habit of speeding up songs to Benny Hill levels, but our songbook is unparalleled for me. When we unleash it, as we do at every away ground, the home fans just look on in awe of us.

The 1894 lads do great work, but it ain't really an issue for me and I can think of many clubs who can't hold a candle to our atmosphere.

It's just the way it is at City and we've always done things differently. Good, bad or indifferent, it's what separates us from the cesspits in Trafford and up the East Lancs.

Up the Blues.

this was my experiance too, we had to move out of ss3 for the chelsea fans and chose seats in ss 116.
the atmosphere was pretty good i thought and my young son really enjoyed it,he spoke with one of his mates at school today who always sits near the away fans,he told my lad the atmosphere wasn't as good as normal league games though !
us up in ss3 don't hear much from ss1,
but like you say
i didn't hear anything from chelsea, literally nothing, yet some on here in this thread were saying how loud they were at times, its strange.

Think its about where you are, people in cb3 will say they were loud because they were sat just to the side of them and were in the direct path of noise coming from that direction. where as you were sat underneath them and the sound was travelling away from and above you. If your sat right in front of speaker it's going to be louder than if you're in a Different room.

Oh you are talking out of your arse.
I have been going nearly 50 years as have the majority of my mates and we really give a shit and we make noise.
If you have any more baseless sweeping statements come and say them to our faces. We are in the Townley, sat by the side windows before most home games
We will probably be a bit pissed but still able to give you a bit of slap you gobby little ****
Haha the absolute state of this !

Are you the Ronnie Pickering of Bluemoon offering straighteners in the Townley cause you disagree with a post.

Embarrassing

I was in 116 for Bournemouth and was a great atmosphere usually in 93:20 which is always a bit quiet but comfy :-)

My left knee is fucked, so I watched the match on the TV last night. I did have a ticket via the cup scheme.

Honest opinion. Coming through on the TV.

Overall I thought our support was decent at times, especially in the 2nd half, patchy and very quiet at other times, especially in the 1st half.

Most of the time you could hear singing from SSL1 but it didn’t come across overly loud or clear on the TV. Follow, follow(constantly), tearing Cockneys apart again, the Ortega chant, plus a few other chants were audible. The only time you could hear all the stadium was stand up for the champions, come on City, the best team in the land.

Not wishing to p*ss people off as this was on TV, but being brutally honest the 1st half was (very) quiet with sporadic bursts of City chanting. The 2nd half was (much) better especially towards the end of the match after the 2 goals.

Considering there were 6000 Chelsea fans or whatever they brought to be given the 3rd tier, they sounded louder, but their chants were sporadic. Champions of Europe, you’ll never be that or see that was loud, plus a few other Chelsea chants. Overall Chelsea did come across louder on the TV, so there is some truth that having a large group of singers in SSL3 works.(on the TV)

What I did notice was the lack of banter with the away fans.(obviously) If Chelsea had sung the Champions of Europe you’ll never see that, 2-0 and you still don’t sing, etc, in the SL1 away end, there would have been an instant reaction by 111, 110 and SSL1 to that. There didn’t seem to be any reaction to Chelsea singing those piss taking chants coming across on the TV last night.

I did notice City fans sat down in the SSL1 away end last night. I said that would happen. That’s not a criticism. City have to sell those tickets, so families, new city fans, etc will buy them. They aren’t the type of fans who are going to stand up for 90 minutes, link 110, 111 and SSL1 and join in with the chanting. Saying that they may have joined in with the chanting last night?

Overall I thought the atmosphere was OK-ish. Probably what you’d expect for a midweek Carabao cup match.

The only time you could hear all the stadium was stand up for the champions, come on City, the best team in the land
This is what I bang on about all the time mate. Fans around the ground want to chant the ‘City’ songs. When more of them are chanted, more of the ground join in.

The Fulham game epitomised it perfectly:
First half it was more of the clap-along songs which are quite monotone, very few big belting out of notes at the top of your voice moments, hardly any use of the word ‘City’… and it was only really SSL1 that sung;
Second half we had loads of the anthemic chants which invlove the word ‘City’ more or City are the main character in the song, more variety in notes, more big moments where you try and bellow your lungs out of your throat to get rid of all the week’s stresses and to get the team going… and most of the stadium joined in.

Many around the ground don't seem interested in or, more likely, don’t even know the words to songs like ‘Empty Seats At Home’ and ‘Follow Follow Follow’…

I doubt most know which players are included in ‘Follow…’ or in which order, or don’t know which way round ‘League and Cup’ are in the Ruben Dias chant (if they even know the words that far into the song) because there’s nowhere for them to access the words and in the stadium it can be hard to tell what’s being sung sometimes to pick out the words.

We don’t have a Kippax where 26,000 people can be under the same roof as songs that are sung, most people around the ground don’t go to away games, don’t go in pubs (we barely have any anyway), we don’t have a get-together area in Town before/after games or any fan group channels on YouTube so most fans never get to hear or learn any of our newer songs.

Overall Chelsea did come across louder on the TV, so there is some truth that having a large group of singers in SSL3 works.(on the TV)
That’s the third tier roof effect. You might not notice it in SSL1 but it’s not just on tele that the noise from SSL3 and it’s roof works, it really ejects noise into [most of] the rest of the stadium n’all (with probably the exception of what’s below it in the same stand).

Because those in SSL1 don't hear the noise from SSL3 they won’t recognise the potential noise that can come from under the roof. City fans up there (and we only have 80% of it) really can belt out some noise in the big games! Imagine it with more deliberately situated singers and possibly a bigger tier (like the ideas of a large second tier)…

The only draw backs would be that people used to that close-to-the-pitch feel of the game will be further away and any displays will be up high and not really on tele much (like the broadcasters ever put our displays on show anyway the wankers!)… a bit of a catch-22 that one.

But for as long as away fans are under that roof, especially for Cup games (and there are many better sets of fans for noise than Chelsea who maybe only sang something once every ten minutes last night… imagine the Sheffield clubs, Newcastle or Leeds up there for a Cup game!) they will sound louder than us if our singers are low down.

Follow has 23 words

Blue moon has 19 words

Why do 4 more words preclude the rest of the ground from joining in ?

Again I think it’s an age thing -clapping along to a high tempo song is fun and the young lads will bang the seats and bang the back of the stand to create a rhythm but older fans might literally not have the energy to do that.

Blue moon on the other hand really isn’t that much fun to sing, it’s funereal

Becuase:

‘BLUUUUUEEEE MOOOOOOOON YOUUUU SAAW ME STANDIIIIIIIIN ALOOOOOOOOONE WITHOOOUT A DREEAM IIIIN MYYY HEEEEAAAARRT WITHOOUUT A LOOOVE OOOF MYYYY OOOOOOOOWN’
Arms in the air, belting it out, dead loud, quite slow, well known song (albeit a bit dreary sometimes when it’s not belted out properly and I doubt it’s even in my top ten favourite City songs to be honest)

And it’s not just Blue Moon, its:
‘CIIIIIIITYY CIIIIIIIIIIITY the best team in the land and all the world’ (there’s no better chant in football than that, I fucking love belting out ‘City’ in that song!)

‘WEEEEEEE’RE NOT REEAAALYYY EEEEREE, WEEEEEEEEE AAAAAAAARE NOT, we’re not really ere…’

and many others, the theme is - it has big belting out moments.

Whereas:

‘FollowfollowfolloowwevegotthebestfootballteamintheeewooorldwevegotRodriandGundoPhilandBenardoKevindeBruyneJohnstooooooones’
Clap clap clap clap, monotone bar the odd note (in the way we sing it, that is, it doesn’t have to be so monotone!), quite quiet, quite fast, new, people don’t know the words.

It was very noticeable at Wembley last season against Liverpool from my vantage point on the very back row of the top tier… our clap along songs didn’t get going in our end, our anthems did a bit more… up the other end Liverpool mainly sang anthems and everyone joined in, their two worst participated chants of the day were their two clap along songs (the Beatles one about Klopp and ‘oh I am a Liverpudlian’).

Dortmund are a good example this season in our two games with them n’all. They’re probably the most boring fans I’ve ever heard. Monotone, one-paced songs droning on and on non-stop to the same boring beat over and over… fucking dreadful!

Plus age has nowt to do with it. There are some old time grafters who are fitter and can jump around and clap to songs much more than many young fat bastards could. And there are more young fat lads these days than there’s ever been, probably in human history.

It isn’t about the lyrics, it’s just the way it is and always was, even back at Maine Road. The ordinary fans will sing the classic rousing songs but not the clappers. It’s the same at all other stadiums as far as I can see too. Arsenal, Spurs, United, Everton, Leeds…they haven’t got 20,000 fans going clap clap clap clap clap at 100mph. When they make noise they sing their club anthems. It seems that for some reason our most vocal fans have got into a habit of not singing the proper City songs and that’s the difference at the Etihad.last night made that even more obvious because there was no SS upper tier to take up the slack.

Can somebody explain to me what these clap, clap, clap songs are that are causing such offence. And causing fans not to sing. Thanks.
Because the rest of the ground don’t join in with them and they kill the atmosphere at key times when the whole crowd should and would be urging the team on.

If you don’t sit in the south stand it’s obvious.

No offence being caused by them.

They’re just awayday smaller away section chants (and they’re bloody great at away games… although could be about ‘City’ more!), but they’re not home stadium-wide chants.

They don’t carry around the stadium, they’re quiet so people can’t hear the words and many won’t know the words…

SSL1 have become detached from the rest of the stadium - away fans to one side, pitch below, cooperate section above, and the quietest stand in the stadium to the other side… SSL1 has become a mini-home stadium away section of its own singing the awayday away section suited chants.

This is so evident when you come on bluemoon after the match.

Every one in SS1 logs on and starts raving about how amazing the atmosphere was and how we outsang the Chavs

Everyone who sits in the rest of the ground logs on and starts moaning about how we were outsang by the Chavs.

No one in SS1 can complain about the rest of the ground joining in when all you can come up with is Follow follow and empty seats at home

So what chants do you expect the South Stand to sing for 90 minutes to get other stands and the whole stadium singing?

The chants are not different in nature to the chants in 111, 110 and 109 when most of our vocal support was there. I know because I used to stand in 110. I don't remember anyone complaining about the nature of those chants.

The South Stand start and sing a variety of chants. Some chants get the other stands and stadium joining in, other chants don't.

All you ever hear from the other stands is Come On City, Blue Moon, Best Team In The Land, Stand Up For The Champions.(started by the South Stand)

If anyone would like to post a list of chants they know the whole ground will sing without the South Stand starting them, feel free.

I'm not supporting the South Stand.

My Daughter sat in the Family Stand last night with her friend. She has a season ticket and sits in SSL2. Normally she struggles to hear SSL1 from SLL2, even though she sits in 212. She can always hear the away fans more in SSL3. Last night she said she could hear SSL1 clearly, and she was impressed by their support as a whole.
