Etihad Atmosphere - 2022/23

So what chants do you expect the South Stand to sing for 90 minutes to get other stands and the whole stadium singing?

The chants are not different in nature to the chants in 111, 110 and 109 when most of our vocal support was there. I know because I used to stand in 110. I don't remember anyone complaining about the nature of those chants.

The South Stand start and sing a variety of chants. Some chants get the other stands and stadium joining in, other chants don't.

All you ever hear from the other stands is Come On City, Blue Moon, Best Team In The Land, Stand Up For The Champions.(started by the South Stand)

If anyone would like to post a list of chants they know the whole ground will sing
without the South Stand starting them, feel free.

I'm not supporting the South Stand.
You only ever hear them from the other stands because they’re the type of songs City fans like to sing… City songs.

Oh Man City, The Only Football Team To Come From Manchester
City, We’re From Manchester
(Go West)
We’re The Pride Of Manchester
Na na na na na na na na City
City ’Til I Die
We All Follow Man City, Over Land And Sea
You are my City, my only City

…plus many many more

We always used to sing those, they were sung most games up until about 8-10 years ago, our core chants, then one day - bumph - they disappeared, never to be heard again… now barley any of our chants in SSL1 have the word ‘City’ in them and only the odd few are these kind of chants.

It might take a while to get these off the ground again since it’s been YEARS since we’ve heard some of them. but I GUARANTEE there is more chance of getting a better stadium-wide atmosphere with these chants and new ones like them than the current crop.

Against United the atmosphere fell dead on its arse at 6-1 up because ‘Gerrard slipped, Suarez cried’ (what are we singing against United for?) and songs like it were getting sung instead of stuff like this:

No offence being caused by them.

They’re just awayday smaller away section chants (and they’re bloody great at away games… although could be about ‘City’ more!), but they’re not home stadium-wide chants.

They don’t carry around the stadium, they’re quiet so people can’t hear the words and many won’t know the words…

SSL1 have become detached from the rest of the stadium - away fans to one side, pitch below, cooperate section above, and the quietest stand in the stadium to the other side… SSL1 has become a mini-home stadium away section of its own singing the awayday away section suited chants.
Cuz the rest of the stadium fucking dead

Just read the thread over the last few days and we’ve been discussing it to death. To me last night concluded the argument forever. And you’ve written your own list there although you can add Wr Love You City, Hey Jude, Champione, City, we’re from Manchester, If you hate Man United, We’re NotvReally Here, Haaland, Oh Kevin De Bruyne, off the top of my head. Anything that doesn’t go clap clap clap clap clap mumble mumble mumble mumble clap clap clap clap clap basically.

‘FollowfollowfollOOOOOWWwevegotthebestfootballteamintheeWOOOOOORLDwevegotRodriandGundoPhilandBenardoKevindeBruyneJohnSTOOOOOOOONES’
Clap clap clap clap, monotone bar the odd note (in the way we sing it, that is, it doesn’t have to be so monotone!), quite quiet, quite fast, new, people don’t know the words.
I hear what you're saying, but I can well remember "we went to Rotherham" being belted out by the Kippax and that has 100's of words, a few verses, a chorus and lasts an age.

Everyone knew the words and that was before faceache, twatter and mobile phones. It was a proper song, a City identity and if you didn't know the words you fucking found out.

Follow has 6 players in it, a reference to the best team in the land (world) and is plenty "anthemic" enough to be sung with gusto around the stadium.

Hark now hear is far more complicated and that's stood the test of time.

For me, it's just whether you're arsed enough to join the fuck in.

Bar SSL1, 111, 110 and 109, when do any of the other stands start those chants?

I have started and joined in with those chants myself on plenty of occasions over the years. And on plenty of occasions the rest of the ground hasn't joined in with those chats. They have joined in on other occasions. There is no specific reason with this does and doesn't happen.

Because you keep singing your clapalongs. In your defence I think that’s because you can’t even hear each other unless you clap because you have no roof.

I suspect this problem got worse after the stand was extended and the roof lifted. Thank god for for the south stand upper tier in the big matches.

We went to Rotherham has only ever been sung in pubs and concourses and occasionally at the corner at the top of the Kippax. It never went round Maine Road and was rarely sung even on away ends.

I said Kippax mate, not the whole of Maine Road. The Main Stand would never stand for that...
That’s what I said. It was never “belted out” by the Kippax. Very occasionally a couple of hundred in the top corner sang it. The same rules applied at Maine Road.

Dave. (not having a go at you)

What is a clap, clap, clap, mumble chant????

Are you and others now telling us not to sing chants the include clapping because the other stands don't join in? So, no United chants, no quick chants, no clapping chants etc. Where does the list stop?

I don't start chants and join in with chants just to get fans in other stands to join in or to appease them. Sorry, but that's the truth. I start chants and join in with chants to support the team. The other stands hear those chants. If they don't want to join in with the chants that's up to them. That's not my problem.

Like many people on here I've made up chants and started chants that have got Maine Road and the Etihad singing. It's about timing, what's going on during the game, goals, fouls, incidents, bad refereeing decisions, a lull in the game, banter with the away fans, playing with 10 players, last minute goals, etc. There isn't one specific reason why chants do and don't take off and spread around the ground.

You’re changing what we’re talking about. We’re talking about a stadium-wide atmosphere that the ground will join in with (wherever the songs are started).

A lot of the time songs arent joined in with because the rest of the ground can struggle to hear what you’re singing over in SSL1 if the away end are loud and the Kippax Corner are singing something different, so that’s often a challenge to overcome. It can be SSL3 that often leads the chants in the biggest games because they’re the loudest of the lot.

While SSL1 are clearly great at being a mini-singing section for its own purposes, especially in the lesser games where that may be the only area in the ground signing… fans around the ground will and do join in much much more if we can hear you with the classic City songs and they’re hit at the right moments.

None of us are having a go at each other mate. I love these discussions, we all want to create a better atmosphere.

And I would say that 90% of what makes up a good atmosphere isn’t about singing (and which is the main reason why I can’t be doing with the Ultras stuff because they haven’t absolutely none of this at all…) it’s about fan involvement in the game, the ‘ooh’s ‘aah’s ‘come on’s ‘fuck off’s ‘go on’s etc.

That video I posted of Newcastle v Arsenal the other day is a good example.

Liverpool at home in 2019 - we barely sung any songs all game outside the opening few minutes, just after each goal and near the end… it was mainly just intense fan involvement. Same with United at home in 2012. Two of the best atmospheres I’ve ever been involved in and we probably sung more songs last night than both of those games put together.

That’s why Ultras atmosphere can never touch proper intense English atmospheres.

No I'm not changing anything.

There isn't a stadium wide atmosphere at the Etihad.

No matter what the South Stand sings or what any other stand sings it won't create a stadium wide atmosphere for long periods of the match. We haven't got a fan base that can do that or wants to do that.

If you think by changing chants, dropping chants and creating specific chants that will appeal to the rest of the ground and will improve the overall atmosphere during matches, you're mistaken, it won't.

PS. Liverpool at home in the Carabao Cup. Let's get the atmosphere up for that. We can all agree on that.

I can’t keep repeating myself fella. It’s the fact that pretty much everything that comes out of the SS now is a “niche” fast song that doesn’t spread. It looked to me last night like the same small group sang Follow Follow about 40 times. That area is supposed to be giving a lead to the rest of the stadium but it is doing the opposite. Read PC’s posts. He gets it.

If they do it all game against Liverpool with them in the top tier we will be shockingly outsung all night.

I’m not mistaken. It’s proven, it happens.

People around the stadium never join in with:
Empty Seats at Home
Follow follow follow
Ruben Dias
Gerrard Slipped
etc.etc.

Yet you yourself posted that the only time the stadium got involved in the atmosphere last night is when Blue Moon, Come On City and TBTITLAWTW got going.

All of these songs were participated around the stadium in the second half against Fulham on Saturday:
Blue Moon
Oh City We Love You
City, From Maine Road
Ark Now Hear The City Sing
City, City, TBTITLAATW
We’re Not Really Here
Come on City
Ci-ty Ci-ty Ci-ty Ci-ty

Saturday couldn’t have made it more clear to me.

Yes, we're going around in ever decreasing circles.

Here's an idea Dave. Why don't you and others move to SSL1 for the Liverpool game. Come and join us. Start the chants off you want to hear being sung. I'll join in. If those chants do make a difference and get the whole stadium singing more, I'll give you the credit you deserve.(on here)
