Etihad Atmosphere - 2022/23

How was it tonight?

I’m in 109 and spent the majority of the game speaking to the 6 year old next to me - teaching him the chants, etc. Minus the swearing of course!

My mate was in the away end and said City were dead quiet / Chelsea noisy. Total opposite to me - I only heard Chelsea maybe three times? I thought we were good. When Chelsea were loud they were loud, but it was three times max.

Interesting test for @didsbury Dave’s theory.

Scariest takeaway for me is thinking kids are funny and I wouldn’t mind one. Guaranteed anything I have tries telling me they’re a rag.

Forgot to add, follow, follow, follow got going tonight. Another myth buster for DD. For me, songs can get going regardless - they just need knob heads like me drinking from 2pm not to care how they look, so others join in.

From my seat in 328 the atmosphere had the potentil to be good but was spoilt by a group behind the goal who spent the whole game singing “follow follow” repeatedly, interspersed with the odd other indecipherable clapalong. I think there was maybe one Blue Moon, one Stand up for the champions and one or two Best Team in the Lands and they caught on, but it was noticeable that when the Chelsea fans sung they sung proper songs and also were singing “is this a library” at the same moments that our lot behind the goal were going clap clap clap clap clap incessantly.

There was noise but to me it was another case of one block killing the rest of the stadium.

My voice is totally gone this morning (I was one of the knob-heads at the back of 115 trying to get the singing going).

We tried a few different things tonight. We sang a clap along song, then tried to sing an anthem, then another clap along, then another anthem etc.

People weren’t joining in with the Anthems in our block, so we couldn’t get them to spread other than two or three times.

Didn’t hear Chelsea’s fans once.

Thought the atmosphere was pretty good.

Ortega is mint isn’t he?

Can't believe the next round of this is being played two days after the World Cup final, absolutely fucking madness. We might be fielding a near academy eleven bar Haaland and Mahrez
A lot of players could be back a fortnight before...we don't know who"ll reach the quarters..

You can’t hear away fans from under there when they only have the top tier although there wasn’t much singing from the Chelsea lot anyway. I went in there (SS1) for Burnley in the cup and didn’t hear anything. Often SS3 can’t hear SS1 either.

Are City fans not in the South stand allergic to singing any other chants but the "proper ones" no reason why other stands couldn't join in with the follow chant it's not an hard one too know the words for

They’ll sing the old classics but not the 100mph clapping ones. It’s just the way it is and always has been.

I think this is why we are where we are. The anthems don’t spread in the south stand because there’s no roof, the clapalongs don’t spread in the stadium. With no upper tier to start the anthems we get nothing but clapalongs behind the goal.

Fair play for trying. It wasn’t bad. Chelsea fans were shushing and singing is this a library because they couldn’t hear you though.

Nice to see the people coming down from SSL3 seeing what it’s actually like in SSL1 as well.

I’ve not been lying on here. 115 is a brilliant atmosphere in our own little microcosm. :-)
I was in 117 last night ( my normal seat is 317 )..
It was ok standing but definitely prefer the atmosphere in SS3.

Took me quite a while to enjoy 315, used to love seeing the whites of players eyes when I was in 117 and that they could hear you calling them a **** etc.

Last night I realised how much of our play you miss downstairs, the movement we are privileged to watch upstairs is something level 1 will never see.

Yep. We'll keep trying. We did get one or two Anthems going, which is better than nothing. The more we try it, the more they'll spread. We just have to be consistent.

It's really weird how you can have a few hundred (maybe a few thousand) fans singing, yet because of the stadium layout, you don't hear it. United got pelters for it, but they employed a firm to work on acoustics at Old Trafford which (I think) has helped with the same issue there.

Watch it live in level 1 and record the game if you want to see the movement etc ?

What do you prefer about it in SSL3?
Can I answer that as well?

Plus:
Good bunch of guys around me
Watching the movement of the players
Decent chance to sing
Can manage to stand for big games
Cheap, middle of SS3 £22 (the reason I left 117)

Cons:
Players can't hear individual shouts
Sometimes seems a long way to the action
Takes forever to get out of the stand as I stay to the end
Bar service is slow
Not enough toilets

I'm still paying less now that I was in 117 when SS3 opened is the overriding factor.

I agree the noise doesn’t travel well between levels. However, like Fulham, Chelsea fans did their shushing just after the South Standers had sung a song so the cockneys must have heard us. I think West London fans are a bit different.
