The Etihad Stadium has been named as one of the country’s greatest landmarks.
Manchester City’s ground has been included on a list of the most recognisable structures in England - and people who built it are set to be honoured at a special ceremony.
The list was selected by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and also features The Gherkin in London, the Library of Birmingham, the Leeds First Direct Arena and Sage Gateshead.
The stadium in East Manchester was created for the Commonwealth Games in 2002, but the Blues soon converted it from an athletics arena to a football stadium and it’s now home for City fans.
Kevin Parker, 53, general secretary of Manchester City Supporters’ Club, hailed its inclusion.
He said: “I may be biased but of course the stadium is one of the best buildings in the country.
"It was a great thing for Manchester when the stadium was built and City did a fantastic job converting it.
"A lot of stadiums are a bit cold, but the Etihad is different.
“When you’re driving towards it, it’s really impressive and it’s designed to create an atmosphere.
The stadium was built by Laing Construction at a cost of £112 million - and is set to be expanded from 48,000 to 60,000 seats.
Pete Bradshaw, head of infrastructure development and corporate responsibility for City, said: “We’re honoured to be named as one of the country’s most iconic structures.
"We’ve always wanted to ensure it was a structure that residents from east Manchester and the north west could be proud of.
"This accolade is a recognition of the people who built it and those who embraced it as their own. We look forward to a new a chapter following the expansion.”
A CITB spokesman praised the stadium’s design.
He said: “Its elegant roller-coaster roof design and cable net system can be seen from miles around and shows off the best of British building.
"Its design enables access for all, it’s an inclusive building for everyone.”
CITB wants to find people who helped build the stadium, with the chance of going to the Pride of Construction Awards in London on September 10.
Nominations can be made at citb.co.uk by August 11.
