Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Thread

UoM has a big sports centre in Fallowfield and a smaller centre close to town on Oxford Rd, but I've never heard of any UoM students doing sports science or physiotherapy, that's an MMU thing. MMU is the old Poly which does the more vocational training, whilst UoM is more academic. MMU is the natural fit for sport. If MMU have pulled out, it feels unlikely that anyone will step in.
Spot on .

I think that’s right. This feels like a significant blow to the clubs expansion plans at the Etihad.

I don’t really think it’s a surprise MMU pulled out. Just from a student point- it’s pretty far away and a massive pain especially if you have lectures at all saints as well

The options are getting less and less for the Etihad Campus around the stadium, as it's taken so long for MCC and ADUG to come up with sensible and viable options for the land.

The arena proposal, if it is to be located on the Etihad Campus, has hit a shit storm.

Any plans at all for an indoor water park have been gazumped by the Therme proposal at Trafford City.
https://www.placenorthwest.co.uk/news/therme-reveals-plans-for-trafford-wellbeing-resort/

There's already a huge variety of leisure activities and destinations at Trafford City. Chill Factore E, Lego Discovery Land, iFly, Sea Life, etc. https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attra...ford_Trafford_Greater_Manchester_England.html

Any original and different leisure options for the Etihad Campus are getting less and less. Jokingly, a GreGgs just isn't good enough or exciting enough anymore.

I appreciate MCC and ADUG are trying to bring something distinctive and different to East Manchester, but the MMU Sports Science Campus was never a good idea in my opinion.

I appreciate that's easy to post now after they pulled out.

MCC and ADUG need to get on with making the Etihad Campus a proper leisure destination in it's own right, compared to the city centre, and Trafford City. How they go about that now is anyone's guess, as those leisure options are dwindling fast.

The Super Casino proposal was thrown out by the House of Lords years ago. MCC and the ADUG won't go back to that again.
whats your best view of how this will pan out. I wonder what kind of blow to future business plan this provides? Does this news risk the stadium expansion I wonder?

I’m not a academic but my mrs is a lecturer and in my travels I’ve seen Plenty of universities have campuses away from there city’s. Manchester has campuses in Crewe for example so getting a uni from further afield could be a option. I think It’s about numbers and funding for them not where they are based .

I think the Crewe Campus closed - and was supposed to move to the Etihad but, obviously going elsewhere.

I don’t know.

TBH, I’m frustrated at the lack of movement on the Etihad Campus proposal/s. There’s been nothing concrete yet, just snippets put out in the public domain by MCC, and plenty of rumours. The Arena being the latest one.

It seems an age since the CFA and the SS expansion were built and completed with very little happening since.

I appreciate these things take time, and MCC and ADUG are trying to do something different in East Manchester, but they seem to be trying something too radical and different for that part of the city.(East Manchester)

In my opinion the Universities should be kept South of the city centre along the Oxford Road Corridor. That’s where the nucleus of higher Education is in the city, and it should remain there, instead of being dragged over to the other side of the city.

A huge new Leisure, Conference, Hotel, Arena, etc, district should be built around around the Etihad stadium. It would be on the doorstep of the city centre, and would complement the city Centre perfectly, in my opinion.

Who knows?

The waiting game goes on.(and on....)

What you say makes sense I think. Whilst a sports centre of excellence sounded great. I always wondered how much spending power it would bring to the Etihad campus. That’s what we need, footfall and revenue. Whilst this is a set back, maybe something better for the club will emerge. I really hope so.

Plus a lot of universities are nervous about life without EU funding with less foreign students post-Brexit. They are also facing tougher competition from other universities. Getting anything done quickly is impossible in this country. Our political decision-making processes are 30 years out of date.
EU funding will hit hardest in research funding rather than student fees. I am unsure how that will affect MMU. Manchester University is likely to take a bigger hit there.

The higher education aspect of this proposal went beyond football revenue. It was about urban regeneration, education & 21st century technology jobs & opportunities for the brightest inner city youngsters.

The link with CFA was advantageous on several levels, but this expansion was about so much more than football.

The plan is for a world class sports science campus for education, training & rehabilitation. There were links with Hope Hospital to ensure the best training/world class medical/physio facilities would be available to City & MMU, and one which could also operate on a commercial level to service sportsmen & women globally.

We currently send our players to Barcelona for the best treatment. This facility should have provided these services & more, right on our doorstep.

The project isn't dead. It's just we have to start again with a new education partner, who have a greater, long term vision for what CFG & MCC want to achieve.

I have experience of dealing with short sighted people who can't see beyond the end of their snotty noses. No wonder Richard Leese & CFG are seriously pissed at all the time wasted. We need to choose our partners more wisely in the future.

There are two aspects to this thread - the stadium and the development of the surrounding area. My main interest is the stadium as that is what affects us mostly as supporters.

Whilst it would be great from a wider perspective for the collar site development to transform a large part of East Manchester I would prefer that the club upgrade the stadium to the point where they would have nothing more to do on it rather than wait many years for whatever might transpire in the surrounding area.

I agree although the infrastructure around the stadium is poor. It needs something to kick start it and attract businesses that will enhance the local economy. It’s not dissimilar to old Trafford 25 years or so ago. Since then so much retail and leisure and hotels have gone up. The stadium lacks even a hotel. Would love to see a tall observation tower go up just as a statement and landmark for the area.

Think we send them there only to see one specific surgeon (or his understudy, if I remember correctly). Regardless of our facilites I don't think that'd change under Pep.
