Like most of Europe Prague has advanced transport infrastructure which puts us to shame.
 
A lot of talk about Underground Trams in the City Centre...

Realistically, the 'better' option in my opinion would be a 'ring road' for the tram.

It seems strange that you have to go into Town to come back out for a relatively short distance (as the crow flies).

On a match day, the majority of passengers have to go into Piccadilly and change. It would potentially be quicker if there was a link between Ashton Line and the potential Stockport line (which could link into Airport/Chorlton/Sale etc.

Perhaps underground portions wouldn't be as difficult further out from the centre?

I am a little concerned about how the existing infrastructure will cope when the Etihad is expanded and match day coincides with concerts.

That would make too much sense, he would rather start a new line underground spending billions of tax payers money;-)
 
There's more chance of United building that new stadium than Manchester having an underground.

Stuff like that just doesn't get built anymore especially round here - too much money, too much work.

The problem is more about how to have through trains like most modern cities have. Okay we have the Castlefield corridor but it’s too narrow so our main stations have become mainly terminals.

A tunnel would free up capacity for local services to run including tram-trains. As far as we know. So for instance the Bury-Altrincham line would be great to swap over to Tram-train as it was formerly train anyway but both ends could extend (Bury to Ramsbottom or Rawtenstall) and Altrincham potentially to Knutsford but would reduce the impact on the city centre surface lines.

The problem with a ring-road (ring-rail?) solution is that it would mean sharing roads with cars, like the Ashton line. And that is proving to be problematic. Only this week a tram was taken out by a Land Rover and as that line is currently severed due to the works in Picc Gardens, the vehicle is currently sat doing nothing until PG is re-opened in August. It would not surprise me if tunneling works out cheaper in the long run (and by that I mean 20+ years).

The proposed underground line will be linked and bundled in with United's new stadium and the redevelopment of the surrounding area, includingTrafford, Trafford Wharf, etc.

If there is only 1 city centre Underground line, it will run from the New Old Trafford, to Victoria Train Station, to the new underground train station at Piccadilly Train Station, on to the Etihad Campus. Ultimately it will free up space and take passengers off Metrolink. Running the underground line to both stadiums will make a shit load of money for the underground. 62,000 fans at the Etihad, and 100,000 fans at the new Old Trafford.

That's what I think.

There isn't a pups chance of a underground based on running from the City Centre to the Etihad. The cost would be eyewatering and the usage would be limited to the events organised. Even with regular evening concerts and up to 30 football matches does not generate the traffic to justify that level of spending for a 2 km journey (25 minute walk).

A more realistic solution would be to add a new station to the Piccadilly to Ashburys line using tram-trains.
