Thought that was the Ardwick Hippodrome!
Interesting that - I always knew it as the Ardwick Hippodrome. Lived in Longsight and every Christmas my family took me to the pantomime -late 40's early 50's. or alternately to the Circus at Belle Vue on Boxing Day.
In those days the Apollo was an ABC cinema seating about 2,000. - as big as the Odeon on Oxford Street. Happy days.

There was/is the Hulme Hippodrome iirc.

Aah the Hulme Hippodrome - I used to go there on Tuesday nights in the 60's to watch them record Pop North with Dave Lee Travis as the compere in his 30's gangster suit and in his 30's gangster car

I remember The Move throwing electric bananas into the audience - vibrators LOL

Great music and the great Mercer/Allison City team - Brilliant times

Couple of weeks before Cochran died in car crash near Bristol.

Fucking hell that car needs a good clean!

A good clean and a good replacement. Looks like K9's grandmother.

Those trees alone will make such an impact around those parts....such a good decision to base this academy in the local area, when others hide away in the country offering nothing to the Cities/urban areas they have their grounds in.

@Dawlish Dave - no need to apologise about straying off topic...this is the most freeform jazz thread on these boards...

Vimeo doesn't work on BM(tried), so you will have to click on the link.

Jesus has even got a brand new spade - I hope the plot where they are standing is one of the square feet that Rag with the taxi business was selling to fellow Rags a few years ago to stop the whole development!

Nice to see the bridge going up quite a landmark

Heard the rags are building a slippery slope into the ship canal, can anyone confirm?

Again, not directly related to the Collar/Campus plot but with one or two cogs on the rumour mill suggesting a concert venue on the site and the Apollo in Ardwick shifting (or did I make that up?) these proposals are of interest:

PDF form at the moment, though there might be a few Jpgs knocking around. New residential apartment build directly opposite the Apollo - site nicely together? I like the venue myself, and my eldest daughter has now started to go to gigs there...

http://www.publicaccess.manchester.gov.uk/associateddocs/selecteddoc.aspx?104931-dsx-0001.pdf

Did you know that opposite the Apollo used to be the Ardwick Empire?

It was demolished in '64

<a class="postlink" href="http://manchesterhistory.net/manchester/gone/empire.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://manchesterhistory.net/manchester ... mpire.html</a>

So it wouldnt be beyond belief if they thought that getting rid of the Apollo was deemed necessary for the wider good.

Thought that was the Ardwick Hippodrome!

http://manchesterhistory.net/manchester/gone/empire.html

It was the Empire, and then was refurbished in 1944, and renamed the Hippodrome, i remember it well because we lived on Higher Ardwick in the early 60s
