European super league

Is there any evidence that this was about a super league, other than the Sun's version of things? Any quote? They don't look very smartly dressed for a big powwow.

It might have been about other things - a US-based summer tournament, for example.

Is there a dress code for a us summer tournament and another dress code for a super league? Haha. I agree with your main point though.

The only reason clubs do preseason where they do it is to make money, though. What's more, as the stories floating around about how upset Pep is at the idea of a Manchester Derby friendly natch shows, clubs generally don't want their preseason to get competitive because it distracts players from the more important issues of fitness and learning tactics. It's youth football that needs more competitive games, not senior football.

I wish I could believe this but I just can't. I know everyone hates the Sun but I think here that we have to remember that there's no smoke without fire in places like this - the Sun knew to be at the right place at the right time to take those photos and they were able to identify an obscure US businessman just from his photo so they clearly had a tip-off. What's more, there were no representatives of Euro clubs yet they zeroed straight in on it being a challenge to the CL not the PL. The dots seem to add up to them knowing something, to my mind at least.

I was privy to this yesterday, it is American TV calling the shots on this one.

I am 100% against any kind of tournament which doesn't reward merit, but the idea the club can just ignore it, or that the domestic 'top' clubs can just ignore City, is ridiculous. City are a big business & will have to be frontrunners either for or against. If they can't fight it, they will have to join it.

Where the power lies, is with all the other clubs who aren't invited. They get together & tell the others they are completely on their own, refuse to play them, kick them out of the various leagues, & cups, then the majority of fans in every country will have no interest in watching the euro 'superleague' & most fans of those clubs in it will be totally pissed off & want to play in the domestic leagues instead. Also the current tv deal will have a block on stuff like this happening anytime soon.

For that reason, I doubt this is about a 'superleague' as such. If one does occur, it will probably replace the Champions League, alongside the Prem & still involve qualification, but the 'old guard' will want an 'istree' clause inserted to try & give them an advantage, perhaps a playoff, for qualification.

This could be to discuss another tournament altogether, or to discuss the ramifications of the collapse of FIFA/UEFA or the schedule changes caused by the World Cup etc etc.

If all the non invited clubs in europe stand together, then they can destroy any closed shop 'superleague' imo.

Miss the point, mate. The Premier League co-operative will lose all those TV billions if the Big Five aren't a part of it. They make up the majority of the pot to begin with.

The drive to commercialism is across all facets of life. The best players want to be at the best clubs with the best chance of winning.

And the viewer calls the shots.

I suspect, a two-tier European League, with promotion and relegation to placate the naysayers.

A) how can anyone know this what they were talking about?
B) the mirror aren't the most reliable are they?
C) fans outcry would be far too much for this to happen
D) I still cant believe little old City are being thrown in the same hat as the 'big guns'
E) this cant happen
F) this wont happen

I see that, but if the other clubs stood up to them & refused to accept a superleague without promotion etc, then the 'big' clubs here would stand to lose all the money they currently get from the Premier League, which would make the 'superleague' idea a stupid one.

It just needs the other clubs to stand firm.

I think it's a non starter without the backing of the leagues. The fans won't go for it. Would be like Kerry Packer's World Series Cricket. High standard, no fans.

Are you saying this will replace the champions league or the premier?

Something is going to give, and it's just a matter of time. Once the Yanks get involved the money will Sky rocket again. I for one think that clubs from South America will eventually be involved, and as I've said before, if the Chinese keep putting money into their game then they'll have involvement as well. I can see a future where there'll be a League type competition where we'll be away at River Plate, or New York etc, etc. Hopefully ticket prices will be low......
