European super league

no suprise really and I would hazzard a guess the american owners/execs are pushing this the most, but we cannot be blinded that our club will want to stay in with this group of so called elite clubs. Will be the death of any chance of proper competition from all but a few who could buy their way in. I would not got to these games

I just don't see the need to change anything. We have a good league system across Europe, with the best teams constantly being refreshed, new blood coming into the major European competition which gives everyone involved in football, at all levels, hope and a reason to keep going.

I doubt it will happen anyway, but if City joined this super league then bollocks to it, I'll pack it in.

There has been a couple of elephants in the room for a good few years.

First one is that the Champions League is no longer the attractive pinnacle of the domestic game. It's tired and needs revamping / replacing.

The second is that there is a huge appetite in other parts of the world to watch European football but that this potential isn't being exploited. The most clubs do in Asia and America is a pre-season tour with half the team consisting of kids - that's not enough - they want competitive matches. I fear fans saying "I won't go" may be missing the point - if this does take place I think it will be held on a global stage at venues around the world.

They won't need fans in the actual stadiums, they don't now, and this would be much greater money. There are enough 'new age' fans to finally know no different. Way of the world.

There is no chance that a Norwich or Southampton would kiss goodbye to £100m a year, on the principle that they might qualify for the Champions League one year.

Has to be a commercial reality for those type of clubs. They get the money because of who they compete against.

As we have seen with the SPL, the money fell through the floor, once they thought it could thrive without Rangers.

I actually quite like the idea of a Champs revamp. Can well imagine Celtic and Rangers would also be involved?

I don't mean that Southampton or Norwich kiss goodbye to 100m though. I mean that all those clubs tell Utd etc, that if you join a superleague without promotion, YOU will be kissing goodbye to 100m as we aren't going to play you anymore & we recon therefore, you won't do it.

That then gives the 'big' clubs the choice of gambling on a superleague, with no fans, thus no atmosphere, dwindling tv interest, or remaining in the Prem, getting their 100m pa which will probably go up again, & still having the extra income from the Champs League as it is now & that will probably go up too.

Also imagine if all the clubs in europe blacklisted the superleague clubs where do they get the next generation of star players. They can create one or two, but 20 each ?

No point in forming a suprleague under those circumstances imo. Not worth the gamble, imo mate.

If they were to revamp the Champs League so it ran alongside the Prem etc, & had promotion & relegation, then I wouldn't care so much. The money involved would be enough to allow clubs to retain two squads of players. But that in itself would devalue the Prem, because the competition would disappear, & the same 5 clubs would just batter everyone else, so the Prem tv money might drop instead of increasing.

I think it's a non starter without cooperation. Unless the other clubs have no balls to fight it.

I recon this meeting will be about milking money via other means, perhaps games in the US, China & what to do about making money before/after the World Cup in Qatar.

This to me would be the death knell of traditional football, UEFA may be totally inept and corrupt but the competition is open to all based on merit and achievement, as opposed to revenue and brand.

It just shows how out of touch modern Football clubs are with their core supporter base. I'm sad to say it but if/when this goes ahead I won't give the club another penny.

The reasons you list above for no change are the exact reasons the elite clubs are using to push for change. They don't want the best teams to constantly refresh, or for new blood to come into major European competition. They want to be in the highest profile, most profitable, competitions themselves. Every year. Ideally without having to spend huge sums of money to achieve that. A European Super League means the owners of the likes of AC Milan and Liverpool can continue to under invest in the clubs yet still bring in huge amounts of money and play in high profile competitions. It's exactly what these types of owners want.

I wouldn't want City to get involved in this sham "competition" simply because of the other sets of entitled, history driven tw*ts who would be rubbing their hands at not having to qualify.

How does this sort of shit give the likes of Leicester or others, the chance to progress.

As usual it is the self-centred sh*ts , driven by the greed .

Strangely David Gill wasn't mentioned, but I am sure the slimy tw*t will be lurking in the background.

Please City stay dignified !

I know, but that isn't sport is it, it's theatre. You can still read Shakespear now, and next year and the year after. It might be entertaining the first time, but then it's going to become repetitive and boring. Without the constant cycles, ups and downs, football isn't exciting and long term would be detrimental to any team that takes part IMO.
