European super league

As expected then, can people calm down now instead of being led by the nose by the media?

They have been caught with their pants down, mate.

Seriously, people can accept any denials they want, but a summer tournament in the States already exists, courtesy of Ross.

And in the busiest period of the season, the five most important clubs decided just to meet, with a snapper knowing time and place, the coincidence of handshakes outside of the actual foyer?

The question is, what must Daniel Levy think of not getting an invite ;)

Are you saying this will replace the champions league or the premier?

The Champions League. It's a new European super league, consisting of the 'top clubs', initially by way of invitation.

Some may recall some fierce denials from PSG about 18 months ago about a rival league, worth a couple hundred million each.

This guy Ross doesn't need to come to London to talk about a fucking summer tournament, he's a much bigger fish than that.

I've already sacked the CL off, it's corrupt and fixed, this would seriously bring in to question my love for football.

What makes it worse is that Ushited have come out and said they're content with the way it is, including the CL qualifying criteria (even though they may not qualify for the second time in two seasons) and the FA cup and replays. To think we would contemplate supporting something like this rtuely turns my stomach.

Perhaps Mr Levy got his own back by grassing them up to the papers ??

I see that, but if the other clubs stood up to them & refused to accept a superleague without promotion etc, then the 'big' clubs here would stand to lose all the money they currently get from the Premier League, which would make the 'superleague' idea a stupid one.

It just needs the other clubs to stand firm.

I think it's a non starter without the backing of the leagues. The fans won't go for it. Would be like Kerry Packer's World Series Cricket. High standard, no fans.

They won't need fans in the actual stadiums, they don't now, and this would be much greater money. There are enough 'new age' fans to finally know no different. Way of the world.

There is no chance that a Norwich or Southampton would kiss goodbye to £100m a year, on the principle that they might qualify for the Champions League one year.

Has to be a commercial reality for those type of clubs. They get the money because of who they compete against.

As we have seen with the SPL, the money fell through the floor, once they thought it could thrive without Rangers.

I actually quite like the idea of a Champs revamp. Can well imagine Celtic and Rangers would also be involved?

Something is going to give, and it's just a matter of time. Once the Yanks get involved the money will Sky rocket again. I for one think that clubs from South America will eventually be involved, and as I've said before, if the Chinese keep putting money into their game then they'll have involvement as well. I can see a future where there'll be a League type competition where we'll be away at River Plate, or New York etc, etc. Hopefully ticket prices will be low......

As we can clearly see, the world is becoming a much smaller place.

The people who run City, United, Chelsea, Liverpool & Arsenal don't make a habit of running round shooting geese that lay golden eggs. And the PL lays increasingly humungous golden eggs. Any desire to develop a European league has to be tempered by the need to preserve the value of the PL. Even if you attribute the most reprehensible motives to the top clubs, including City, there has to be trade off between what's in their interests as far as European football is concerned and the fact that the PL butters their bread (more accurately spreads caviar on it at the moment).

If I were a betting man I would wager a substantial sum that this morning at least one of the Glazers, Khaldoon etc received a phone call from one of the Murdochs threatening dire financial consequences if this initiative were to have a detrimental impact on the value of the PL telly rights.

Even the issue of automatic qualification for a European super league is a double edged sword. If such a system currently existed United and Liverpool's league season would have been over by Xmas. In Liverpool's case they would have spent the second half of most seasons except 07/08 and 13/14 trying to flog tickets and commercial interest for completely meaningless games. And how would Sky and BT Sport react if only one or two PL places matter as far as qualifying for CL spots are concerned?
