Extinction Rebellion

Yeah jokes aside the theory is cracked, even the process is. The issue is that we haven't found an alloy capable of containing the energy released by fusion on any kind of worthwhile scale. It tears through the strongest materials we have so while we can generate the energy, we can't channel it usefully. Most technological advances you can put a timescale on but a material capable of containing fusion? Hydrogen Fusion creates the toughest elements in our universe, it's quite possible that there's no material out there capable of containing and directing large scale fusion as there's no greater power in the universe outside of black holes.
One of sciences greatest challenges.

Good on them, I say.

Nothing wrong with being justifiably indignant about the self-destruction of our fucking environment!

This issue has to be kept at the top of the political agenda, by hook and/or by crook, because the cynic in me thinks that a lot of the political shenanigans that's going on globally is all part of a distraction campaign from the harsh reality.

People will die for this cause, one way or another. There isn't a bigger one facing the whole planet that I can think of. Something big has to happen to wake people up. Whether that's a huge "natural" catastrophe or a martyrdom, or two, the cause IMO is just.

My daughter is 6 and I don't know how I break it to her that when she's in the prime of her life, there may well be billions of lives lost globally and she might witness the breakdown of civilisation, as we know it, because people like me knew this was coming years ago and were just a bit shit.

Thanks Dad.

In fairness and rather depressingly the next generation would have done fuck all as well. The al gore documentary came out 13 years ago and was big news and should have been an eye opener. 13 years later and we have managed to charge people pennies for plastic bags and up tax for certain cars. The good cars we are not paying tax on are now seen to be huge polluters. Imagine what could have been achieved. Well done all.

There was always going to be a huge human cost. We've chosen our cost. Shame we fucked the rest of the planet over as well. I've pretty much lost faith that we're going to take the necessary actions to sort this out and I'm clinging to the hope of the 1/1000 chance of a technological breakthrough on the level of the internal combustion engine that might just get us out of this shit happening, in a timescale where it can make a difference.

How are you powering them? No solar or wind power down there and hydro generation takes huge infrastructure. Batteries don't perform well under high pressure. Nuclear is unconscionable.
The French have been using nuclear power for 60% of their energy requirements for the last 50 or so years with no serious incident. It was advocated by Einstein as the future energy provider for mankind. The issue is the fuel; uranium, though abundant, comes with many issues, but there are alternatives, one of them being Thorium.

Research into alternative nuclear fuels is an absolute necessity if we want to be able to provide energy for the eveentual 10 billion people on the planet. Otherwise, what else do you propose? Wind turbines?

As a believer in justice for crimes committed I can’t say we do deserve the punishment.

If we can't dispose of the waste without doing serious damage to the ecosphere then it's unconscionable. Research into alternative nuclear fuels is absolutely a necessity, but where we stand now solar, wind and hydro/wave are far better alternatives with huge untapped potential. Not as cheap though, I'll give you that.

The opposition to nuclear power is very strong in the departments the govt want to bury their waste.
They have still not decided what to do with it.
