Put it this way, do you think the Liverpool executives were dumb enough to pay £35 million for Carroll simply because of his skills?
He is popular. But that doesn't equate good. That said, I acually think he is a fantastic footballer. Football isn't a popularity contest and even if it was, popularity doesn't lead to results. Footballers are assessed on what they produce and what they have proven - and Andy Carroll has proven himself to be the sixth best striker in The Championship.
Now Carroll does have potential to be a handy premier league striker but IMO he'll never justify that £35m fee. He's light years from that at the moment, and it was one of the most bizarre transfers of recent years.
