The word quota is the problem that trips people up, there is no quota that we have to fill. If you want a first team squad of maybe 22 players, even if they are all over 21, you still only would need 5 of them to be HG. Homegrown playes just make building the squad easier, they aren't essential in the way that the media all of a sudden seems to be presenting them as. It's entirely up to how big we want our squad to be really, but the only important number is the 17 foreign players over the age of 21, how many homegrown players you have on top of that is completely up to us.
I feel that my preference for quality long term investment then is only strengthened. If we don't "need" a certain number and can include as many HG players as we deem necessary then why not invest that little bit more in them. Especially in a sanction free summer.

I'm not addressing this part to you personally, I don't see my point of view as being unreasonable or nonsensical.

I'm with you 100%, I don't want Delph at all. If you're going to go for HG players, then either have them as out and out backup players, like 2nd and 3rd choice keepers, or go for big money players who are actually in the team entirely on merit and just make your squad construction easier as a bouns(like Joe Hart). Buying second rate players just because they are homegrown makes little sense to me.

I don't see the gulf between Delph and Schneiderlin being as wide as you possibly believe it to be. I detect an element of snobbery from some about Delph because he is English. England have had their best run in years since he came into the side, possibly a coincidence, possibly not.

It is pretty much a risk free signing as if it doesn't work out we should be able to recoup our outlay.

If we signed a decent HG keeper and sold Willy it would free up one of the non HG slots but who do you suggest who is good enough and would be willing to be no 2 to Hart all season (not Begovic as he is Chelsea bound).

The problem is that top-quality available HG players are in short supply so we have to buy those who are not quite as good but can be squad players, willing and able to do a job for the team (Milner being a prime example in the past).

It's a myth that we can fill our HG quota with youth team players with no PL experience. They will not grind out results away from home for us when the star players are having an off day.

Here Here, but I doubt he will agree with this reasoning neither

On the money there.

Be interesting to see the Delph love in when he shows he's a much better centre midfield player than Jimmy Milner.

I don't know? Pudge puts up a pretty good defence on why he is a limited player compared to what we have midfielders wise, also he will be a super sub with him barely starting 10+ games for us next season..

lol please can you enlighten us all on what you are basing this on? It's certainly not goals scored or assists so go on enlighten me how he is a far better CM than Milner.

I'd hazard a wild guess that he is basing it upon his own opinion.
