Fabian Delph

Mirror says he's relishing the challenge, good attitude to have & good to see.

Delph is at a similar stage in his career as Lescott and Barry were when they came. Established Premiership players in the England squad.

To get a homegrown squad player of Delph's quality for £8 million is great business IMO.

I think he'll do well here.

Fabian Delph: Man City set to sign Aston Villa captain
Aston Villa captain Fabian Delph is set to sign for Manchester City, reports BBC WM.

The midfielder, who joined Villa from Leeds in 2009, signed a four-and-a-half year deal at Villa in January.

His future looked uncertain when Micah Richards, who moved from City to Villa this summer, said Delph had asked for his thoughts about the Sky Blues.

The 25-year-old reportedly did not travel with the Villa squad for their pre-season training camp in Portugal.

Aston Villa tweeted a picture earlier on Friday that included Fabian Delph modelling the club's new kit

Delph helped Villa retain their Premier League status last season, making 28 league appearances, and also played a key role in their run to the FA Cup final, where they lost 4-0 to Arsenal.

On signing his new contract in January, the England international had said he intended to be at the club "for the long run".

"There was no way I was going to bail out," he said at the time.

"This is my club and I want to be here. That's why I am committing my future."

I obviously agree with that but "pre-arguing" doesn't really put that across to people.

Personally I'm for the transfer based almost entirely on its value. I think in 2 years time we can get double that, and also think that he is good enough to play against 15 of the teams in the Premier League and in the League Cup so will help out with squad rotation. Sort of how United always had Wes Brown or Anderson around despite them obviously not being good enough. You need a cake with icing then the cherries on top to function as a decent squad coming up against 60 games a season. If he gives us an option to take West Brom at home on a Sunday so Yaya can stay on the bench for when we play Real Madrid on the Tuesday then I see no real problem with it.

He's better than all of our young players in that position, is home grown and obviously has spectacular value for money. He cost £4m less than Fernando who was a stopgap. Championship players are going for £8m now, it's an insultingly low price.

Him at £8m or Wilshere at £40m to me is just flat out daft as a question. Don't forget, we do need a homegrown midfielder to balance out the squad and we'll be buying one no matter what. Spending less money on this position gives us more money to spend on the stars that we want to land.

That's a fair enough interpretation mate, although it's all based upon the idea that Delph will be happy to be a bit part player. What if he's deluded himself that he can play regularly and be an integral part of a title challenging side for example?

Richards was talking about the lure of playing CL football for Delph recently. If Delph did come, can any of us see him getting a single minute of CL football?

I also genuinely worry about the harm this move could do to his England chances, and the flak we'd get for it. He's been starting for England recently, if that changes because he's not getting playing time here, then he'll be held up as another example to deter genuinely talented English youngsters from signing for us in future - 'look do you want to be just another quota signing for City?' Etc etc.

It would be genuinely terrible for us to get that reputation. Not to mention for young academy lads who'd be wary of falling into that no-man's land when they're considering putting pen to paper for new contracts.

Kind of, but £8m really isn't that much of a big deal in top flight football these days.

Crazy, isn't it?
It is crazy, especially when someone of Sterling's quality goes for anything more than £25m.
