I think he could become crucial in big games IMO he has ability and is able to get around the park upsetting the natural order of players keeping the ball. Not saying he's a world beater by and stretch but him and Fernandinho in the midfield would provide legs and quality into a midfield that seems to lack serious athleticism throughout 90 minutes. Yeah think you're right stats can be misinterpreted a lot of the time probably to appease the American audiences as they love their stats. Not solely able to depict whether a player is good or not.

Well when we play teams like Barca, we are too nervous to pass the ball properly, & don't have enough workrate to cover when we lose it. Unless or until our top players get over their inferiority complex & keep the ball, we need a rethink.

If we get Pogba and move to a three in midfield then he would be a good signing and get regular games .

We would have 5 players competing for 3 spots : Yaya Fernandinho Pogba Fernando Delph

Fernando and Delph would be the ball winners , with the other three slotting in as creativity and spark

For the big games you would play your best three , Yaya Fernandinho Pogba

Any other combinations could work, with Silva and Nasri (if he's still here) slotting in as well. You probably wouldnt want delph and Fernando in the same team though..

Also if Yaya etc are having one of those lazy days, & the midfield is getting overrun, Delph off the bench could make a big difference.

The key to Delph being successful here is him acknowledging his strengths/limitations.

At Villa he's more box to box by necessity, but here he should evolve primarily into a defensive midfield player; we've lack a player with his tenacity in the tackle since De Jong. As somebody has pointed out, his passing and ball retention is proven good enough for us.

His 'name' won't excite certain people, but the reality is our midfield too often gets overrun in the biggest games; Henderson and Allen absolutely twatted Toure and Fernandinho at Anfield, and it was a similar story at Old Trafford. We need a bit of nastiness in there to redress the balance and create the platform for the likes of Silva and Aguero the platform upon which to play.

He should isolate an area to patrol between the defence and midfield; he's better equipped to fill that role for us than Fernando. £8m for this player, given his experience, career trajectory and HG status represents fantastic value; at best he becomes an unsung hero like Barry, at worst we use him as a makeweight to sign another HG players next summer.

Good work Txiki.

Manchester City are on the verge of making Aston Villa midfielder Fabian Delph their first major signing of the summer, Goal can confirm.

Delph will move to the Etihad Stadium in an £8 million deal and sign a long-term contract that will see his wages rise to £100,000-a-week as City continue their home-grown recruitment drive.

The England international understands he will be a squad player at City but has been assured he will be granted a similar level of first-team opportunities to what James Milner enjoyed in his five-year stint at the club.

Delph was set to be a free agent this summer before signing a new four-and-a-half-year contract at Villa in January, but the deal included an £8m release clause that City have wasted little time in activating.

Villa have already moved to replace the outgoing 25-year-old by signing Senegal international midfielder Idrissa Gueye for £9m from Lille.

But losing one of the emerging leaders of his squad will be a significant blow to boss Tim Sherwood, particularly given that captain Ron Vlaar is out of contract and actively considering offers from rival Premier League clubs as he weighs up his future.

Christian Benteke is also the subject of serious interest from Liverpool, though Goal understands the Merseysiders are unwilling to meet the £32.5m release clause that Villa are demanding be met if they are to part with their star striker.

City, meanwhile, hope the signing of Delph will prove just the start of a significant summer transfer spend as they pursue key targets Raheem Sterling and Paul Pogba to reignite their Premier League title aspirations.
