Fabian Delph

Fernando played 33 times last season, when we also had Lampard and Milner in the squad, so I think it's realistic for Delph to get a similar number of games this season even if we signed Pogba.

Just in case you don't receive a specific response, and anyone else is interested: 1 yellow, 1 red. Hothead!

Yeah but you all know that any foul by a city player usually results in a booking-unlike the opposition players who are allowed a few chances!

It's worth noting that 33 games is more than Delph has played at Villa. Last year he played 28 times.

I've not seen too much of Delph (same as most on here) but his performances at The Etihad and against Chelsea (Saturday evening game at VP, was it?) were outstanding. Quicker than I thought and confident. This confidence is the key thing for me. Rodwell & Sinclair always gave me the impression that they didn't belong and couldn't wait to offload the ball to somebody better. If he takes on responsibility at City he'll find he has more space to play because the opposition tend to concentrate on players like Silva and Yaya (who can still play when tightly marked).

Good signing imo. Legs in MF and will protect the back 4.

Don't think he'll be playing right wing Ric.

Edit: or behind the striker. How many games did those two play in CM between them? 4?

Im hoping the signing of Delph will signal the departure of Fernando, would sooner see Fofana getting a run out than him

He's a class player, really don't understand why people are so downbeat on him. Every time we play Villa he stands out a mile as their best player. He slaughtered Chelsea in that game as well.

8 million for England's best centre midfielder who's 25, sounds like a bargain to me.
Great signing at that fee, brilliant news!
Let's give him a chance before we right him off

We won the league in 2014 with Yaya, Fernandinho, Garcia and Rodwell (who hardly played) as our 4 central midfield options.

But then other clubs CM options weren't great either. As it stands our midfield is unbelievably weak in comparison to where the owners want us to be. If we missed out on Pogba and failed to add a world class CM, our midfield would be incredibly shoddy. I understand signing Delph because of the low price he's going to cost us, but at the same time I'm not convinced he's good enough for us.

If we missed out on Pogba, Delph is the kind of player who can stiffen up the midfield, add more pace & help to close down quicker, which is the biggest part we were lacking when playing vs the best teams.

To say our title winning midfield is 'incredibly shoddy' is the biggest load of bollocks probably ever.

Still strange that the price is so low, given that he's their captain and an England international (he can wave bye bye to an England place now he's with us!). His fee to Villa from Leeds was undisclosed - I'd like to know how much they've made on him seeing as they've improved him, and if Leeds put a sell on clause in the contract.

How? I'm sorry but I expect more from a player in a big game than energy, Milner provided that, we need quality player's who can help us to dictate the tempo of possession. Delph might provide us more energy in the centre of the park than Fernando, but that doesn't instantly mran he'll solve our problems in CM. If we went into the season with the four we have now, I highly doubt we'd finish too, or get past the last sixteen of the group stage. Look at other sides midfield options In comparison to ours.

I do look at theirs. I think Silva, Yaya & even Nasri at his best, plus Fernandinho, are as good or better than most we come up against, but largely underperformed last season. I think we are a huge class above Chelsea in that regard. They managed to win the league by being more efficient, not better at football.

Barca passed us off the park, but the main difference between the two teams was how they could close us down with only 3 in midfield & the fact they have Messi, plus Suarez & Neymar. Their whole team was much quicker than ours to close down though. We had one player in our squad who is good at that. Fernandinho. Now we have two. If we sign Pogba, he will improve that energy aspect more than he improves our passing. We already pass it, when on form. Yaya is better at it than Pogba. But we lack balance. Delph helps give us balance in the squad, whoever else we sign.

And we will still not win the Champions League next season whatever, imo. The new players will need time. We will give it a good go in the Prem though.

I agree. At the reported price, it's rather surprising that other suitors were not in for him, as surely his agent would have made the 'get out clause' known.

Perhaps our much slagged off transfer people, were better than theirs & got him tied up first ?
I think the next few weeks will tell whether the transfer team are shite, or very, very good poker players. I'm going for very, very good poker players.
