Fernando vs Garcia

Neither have been any real improvement on Nigel de Jong IMO. Could have save a small fortune!

Another load of tosh that gets repeated to serve an agenda.

NDJ was offered an excellent new contract, far in excess of his talent imo......however he chose to run his existing one down and take the large signing on fee on offer in Italy.
Another who served us well but ultimately looked after no.1 and who certainly doesn't warrant the adoration he receives.

He is not a DM for a midfield duo. Mabye every once from 10 games he can do his job well in a duo but mostly not.

He is a deep sitting DM in a midfield trio, and that role is exactly what he should play and was playing that role at Porto at a very good level. Less running, less energy needed in that role than if he has to do lot more in a duo.

What we dont have is high workrate from player centrally in attacking player. Chelsea have it in Oscar/Willian. Arsenal had it with Ramsey, Cazorla against us and that killed us.

We are so open trough the middle, not enough track back, its a kind of nightmare for DM position players at City and that makes it also a nightmare scenario for defenders.

Still Fernando should be better than he is I think, and so far did not improve the squad much more than Garcia would have.

Also (much like Garcia) his limitations whilst at City, seem to be airbrushed out of history from almost the moment he left. Nigel couldn't make a forward pass if his life depended on it. Garcia wasn't far off that bad. Fernando is a league up from both of them as a holding midfield player.

I assume this opinion on Fernando isn't based on his performances for City? Would seem a rather peculiar viewpoint to think he's a better holding player than De Jong based on their performances in a City shirt.

Football has progressed from the days of a typical holding midfielder. There is no place in most top sides for a player who simply sits and defends in front of the back 4. That player has to be able to win the ball and then look forward and start attacks. A lot of sides play a 4-3-3 to enable a balance of attack and defence, with enough support from midfield to the strikers when the holding player looks to sit back slightly. You see it with Chelsea. Matic can play the role perfectly because Chelsea have Fabregas and Oscar to provide the creativity from midfield. Matic is very good on the ball and looks to get it forward. I don't think Fernando has been anywhere near good enough, but in a side that tends to play 4-4-2 or a version of, with full backs pushing forward, the "holding" player is left with a lot of work to do.

Last season we were often exposed on the counter because of playing 4-4-2. Fernandinho did an excellent job of intercepting and moving the ball forward quickly, but if he failed to intercept there were opportunities to run at our defence.

I think that's a totally different conversation from "Garcia was better than Fernando". I'm also not convinced by Fernando in a midfield two with Fernandinho because it lacks both a certain amount of energy/pace and also it lacks the incisive passing of Toure/Nasri.

What I do think though, is that if it was a straight choice between Garcia, De Jong, and Fernando for having a 'holding' player in your squad, i'd have Fernando all day long. He is as you say often exposed because he pushes too far forward (probably because of the way we play) but as we saw in Rome when we play a more disciplined shape he's absolutely top drawer at breaking up play and recycling possession forwards (rather than sideways and backwards which is basically what Garcia/DeJong were good at).
