One thing the friendlies have shown me again is that without an in-form playmaker we can really struggle to create chances. It happened last season a fair bit after Silva's form dipped and so did ours (mostly on the road), we had loads of the ball but created very little, that happened in the friendlies especially the first two games where over 180 minutes only Weiss had a decent chance that I can remember. It isn't overly concerning as Silva is to come back and there is Nasri who showed good signs of improving last season, but it does make me want more alternatives for creativity in the squad like a deep-lying playmaker and at least one very good winger as Johnson does not offer nearly enough for a team that aspires to be on the level of Real Madrid and Barcelona.
The friendlies have also showed that we have some very talented young players but that they can only be played in moderation and mixed in with a strong base of established players. When we brought the entire EDS team on in the first two games we looked a mess but when we mixed some of them in with players like Yaya to guide them, they were able to play with more confidence and played quite well. Nir Biton is definitely worth a contract because even if he doesn't turn out to be good enough he looks like he could be sold at a profit so it's win/win. Razak was very patchy and quite clumsy at times but when he grew into the game yesterday was really impressive and is quite a dynamic midfielder. George Evans also impressed me, it was evident by his promotion to EDS games having barely turned 17 (the Suarez/Rekik treatment) that he made a lot of progress for the 18s last season but his passing yesterday was very good and he is combative (but went over the top with that nasty foul on Fernandes). And Rekik has already been well discussed, I think we all agree we have someone very special here who already looks like he could be first team ready at the age of 17.
