Have a look at his goals v Southampton away & Spurs away from last season. And his last two assists. His injurles since arriving at City. And his age: 21.

He isn't supposed to be Aguero or Neymar. He is something different. He can score goals, as he has already proved.

So not much point anyone moaning about him really. If he's struggling in a year or two, then maybe.

At the moment, he's still at the 'incredible potential' stage due to his time missed & his age.

Was Jesus bought in the certainty he’d emulate Aguero one day?

Or as a fantastic young prospect who may or may not hit those heights but, for £27m, is worth a fcukin try?

If he’s not hacking it in a year or two, City will probably buy big. In the meantime, I doubt if the club are panicking. While he’s finding his form, the goals are still going in at not too shit a rate.

Others have pointed it out, and I've made this comment about different players before, but expecting Jesus to be a like for like replacement is a bit unfair.


Maybe to illustrate my point, we've never replaced Touré. And we're never going to. There'll possibly never be a player again who has his stature and physique and yet somehow plays with an incredible grace and technical mastery and control. His ability to dictate play on top of it was something special. However, what we did instead was bring in someone else to the position who might never be a direct replacement for him, but has his own wonderful skillset that has meant that whilst we've lost out on certain elements, we've gained others and more importantly not lost out for quality.

The same could be said for Kompany. There's a good chance we'll never sign another centre back that brings everything to the table that Kompany did. However, as it's been shown, we have been able to bring in central defenders who have it in them to be just as good in their own right. Different players, but importantly (at least) equally as good.

The question will be asked again for David Silva. We're never going to have another player who does what he does and right now it seems impossible to think someone else could come in and be just as effective. We're admittedly close to resolving that with Bernardo and even Foden, but with enough analysis you can see that whilst there are similarities there are ultimately plenty of differences. Weaker in some ways, stronger in others. But again, hopefully the overall package is of the same standard. The same again for Fernandinho.

With Jesus and Aguero, it's important again to accept that they're different. Aguero has a certain skillset that no player on the planet has. His natural goalscoring ability is arguably as good as the Premier League has ever seen for starters. When he goes, there is literally nobody we can sign that will do for us the exact things he did. Like the others in our team I mentioned earlier, this kind of footballer only shows up once a generation. However Jesus has his own certain skillset that makes him unique too. And if he fulfils his potential, then we would have a genuinely world class talent on our hands. Even still, he'd never be able to do certain things that Aguero could. However, he'll also hopefully be able to do certain things Aguero that couldn't. Again, weaker in some areas, stronger in others. But ultimately the same standard of footballer. That's the nature of the game and that's how it will go for us with good fortune.

Jesus himself isn't going through his brightest patch at the moment, but we can all see he's working very hard and I think we ought to realise too how he's playing selflessly. He's always looking to create space for teammates, always looking to provide an outlet and always looking to bring others into play. When you take into account he's a 21 year old flashy Brazilian kid, to play with that kind of maturity takes some serious dedication. Watch Mbappé, and for all the talent he has, he has a habit of pissing around a bit too much. Much like Rashford. So for Jesus to be disciplined as he is must be tough, and importantly is still part of a learning curve for him.

We mustn't forget too that development isn't linear. It goes up and down. Players improve, they stall, they sometimes even look like they're stagnating; but then they improve even more! And so on. And that's not exclusive to youngsters, plenty of our older players have gone through and are still going through this up and down process under Pep, most notably Fernandinho and appropriately Aguero. But it happens even more prominently in younger players, as we've seen/seeing with Sané, Sterling, Stones, Zinchenko, Bernardo, Ederson etc. With Jesus being the youngest of the lot, it's going to be the most noticeable with him.


My point being, is that if you think anyone is ever going to replace Aguero then you'd be wrong. Nobody will. But someone can come in and fill the void with their own thing so that hopefully he won't be too missed. Good post - I’m fond of Gabriel and think he is a great part of the squad. That said....he does need a goal or 2 to raise confidence
 
If there is criticism of jesus on this thread it is mostly constructive and we all want the best for the lad , back to his prolific scoring form , please , please ,please can it be tomorrow against the Chavs.
 
Fucking hell. Is his goose cooked now or what? The number 2 striker doesn’t start even when number 1 is out. How must that make him feel? I couldn’t believe it when I saw he was on the bench. And when he came on he did next to nothing. Pep knows best. He was way better 2 yrs ago than he is now.
