Considering the embarrassment of riches that Spain have in midfield does it not speak volumes that he was called up ahead of them?

Why does it matter if he then still plays badly for us? We aren't supporters of Spain.
Confirms that half of Bluemoon are idiots

He's a defensive midfielder.

It's like Fernandinho. Because he cost £30m, some City fans think he should be able to pass like Yaya or Silva. He's very good at what he does

Grabbing at people running past him? He has to fit into a system....our system. He might be brilliant for Spain, though I doubt it, but he needs to play well for us. He is a defensive midfielder that has blatantly not worked out for us because the Premiership is fast and he is slow and he turns slower than milk.

I've no problem with Fernandinho. Good buy.

Turns slower than Milk?
Yet was clocked at having a top pace of 18mph last season. Compare that to most in the prem and he is not slow.

The lad needs to have a run of games to gain match fitness and confidence.
Was a fantastic cog in the Benfica team and being called up for Spain proves he has the quality.

Been called up for Spain to replace Busquets.

Pretty much confirms Del Bosque hasn't got a clue, second time he has called him up now.
Should have logged on here before hand.

You do know they've had pull outs and Alonso is injured?

He's a squad option, not a key starter like you're trying to portray.

I hope he comes good but if I was gaffer I'd have been sending Garcia to Everton and kept Barry here. A mistake that will be clear come end if the season I fear.

Bit in bold. He's not there by merit he's there because they need to fill a squad position.

The cog in Benfica was Witsel, stop trying to rewrite history.

Garcia allowed Witsel to do what he does best.

That's what I think he can do for us, screen the back four and allow Yaya and Fernandinho to do what they do best.

A good article, <a class="postlink" href="http://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2013/feb/01/javi-garcia-manchester-city-screen-idol" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.theguardian.com/football/blo ... creen-idol</a>

They had just the one cog then? Not very functional.

I'm with CTID101 on this to an extent. There's no doubt about it he struggled badly in the early months of the last season, in fact his display away at Wigan was one of the worst individual performances in a City shirt of recent history. The second half away at Newcastle however he was exceptional and from that point on I though he settled down and put in, more often than not, very effective and underrated efforts. He's never going to be showy, in either his ball work, closing down or movement, but he has a role to fulfill which he does with subtlety and little fuss, thanks to a decent positional sense. He should certainly not be used as a centre back, especially in a side playing a high line, but as a holding midfielder he can do a good job. Having said that, if we are to play a pressing game, I don't see any combination of Yaya/Garcia and Fernandinho working in a 4-4-2 and the sooner we switch formation from that the better.

And for just one season too.

Garcia was a crucial part of the Benfica team for years before Witsel even got there, and the only time they won the title in that period was before Witsel was signed (in possibly the most fun, ridiculously attacking system of all time).

Now he is an essential part of our squad for the coming season I am quite prepared to be talked into seeing him as a good player.

Arguably 5th choice central midfield player and 5th choice centre half ... not sure that can be classed essential!

First (and only) choice holding midfielder now Barry has gone though. If we do switch to a 3 in midfield then Garcia is surely going to have to play, unless Zaba fancies a go in midfield again(which seems unlikely)

Me too. I think it will all go out of the window the next time an attacker runs past him and he grabs at them though ;-)

Maybe Barry moving on is the vote of confidence he needed. It will certainly be interesting to see his level of involvement in the coming games as it is crystal clear that the Yaya/Fernandinho pairing is lacking.

If he gts used as a holding midfielder then he'll do fine, but if he gets stuck in defence or in a central midfield two with Yaya then he's really never going to do well. Mancini clearly had no idea what to do with him, hopefully a manager more used to the Spanish style will use him better

I don't understand why we haven't got rid. He is just holding up the progress of Rodwell and maybe a younger player. Why do we insist on having players like Garcia and Maicon blocking the first team route for younger players.

Amen to that. There are some that think he is more suited to centre back than a holding Midfielder, but they are clearly insane. I hope that doesn't still include our Manager. Never again...ever.

Oh and I should add come back soon Vincent....and Micha for that matter.

So that's a world cup winner, champions league winner and a former CL level captain who was only 25.

They offer experience. Garcia isn't even bad, pretty much no one can play that role next to Yaya in a two because of the jaw dropping lack of support Yaya offers anyone.

Rodwell is fantastic but he's made of balsa wood and is only one person, when we need more people than that in reserve.

The "younger player" doesn't even exist right now, see what happens with Huws and Evans I guess.

Yeah, Mancini didn't have a clue what to do with him. His big mistake was expecting him to be able to play football to Premier League standard and then asking him to do so.

Fuck me how is this debate still going. He has been called up for Spain. Torres still gets called up for Spain and hes been very average for the best part of 3 years. it doesn't take away the fact Garcia has never had a good game in the English premier league and is surely the slowest central midfielder in the league.

His game has never and will never suit the premier league. You don't have to be Usain Bolt to play his position but you have to be able to move & turn quicker than a double decker bus, Garcia cannot.

Nail on the head. He is poo not just bad, absolute poo!
