Gas & Electricity

Back in the 70s my old man used to do this. He'd lay the meter on its side on top of paint can. He'd also slow the revolving disc down in the leccy meter using thin photo negatives and sellotape.

Mate of mines photo negative fell into the meter so he had to smash it up hahaha. Cutting a plastic bottle up to the same size is much better.

Apologies. I stand corrected, they were paying about £0.16p per KWh equivalent. I had in my head it was more. So it’s much more expensive now. Right where is the protests….Down with the government ;)

I read the other day that the shock of the rises is expected to be five times worse than the seventies.

Bear in mind there’s a significant difference in energy consumption too so even price per kw isn’t really a comparable when it comes to percentage of earnings spent.

That’s true, we use more energy these days. The 70s oil shock was just oil. This is everything we use.

Honestly I don’t know how people are going to afford it. This is probably got a most to their limit and many beyond. I don’t think we can rely on the government to fund it - it’s simply not practical long term. We need to reduce consumption and energy companies need to do their bit by spreading these costs over the next few years. Anything else the government does will be welcome, Truss won’t do fuck all extra worth a candle I doubt - she’s not socially aware enough.

And folks, please remember...

The fuel price cap is the MAXIMUM your supplier can charge. They don't actually have to charge that much so register your disgust at profiteering every chance you get.

Oh, and if someone tells you the French are keeping prices down, that's because EDF can put them up here to compensate.
That's because EDF is 84% owned by the French government (and it plans to buy the remaining 16% shortly) so its effectively nationalised. That's what should happen with the utility companies heres. Nationalise them so they are effectively non-profit making entities. The only problem with that is would you trust any political party in the UK to do it and not make a complete balls up of it? I wouldn't.

I am on the old meters but was going to upgrade to smart. Do you need to be on an old one to do this?
Yes you should be ok mate, a smart meter they can just do it from their end, which is why I said the letter was misleading, they said I didn’t have to do anything, it would all be done automatically, as I work in the industry I knew it was bollocks for my meter, they knew exactly what they were doing, they just didn’t want people going out pre-loading and getting it cheaper on the old rate.

Lol, don't give me that old chestnut, that's how we got in this shit in the first place. All this cock and bull about how efficient privatisation would make Utilities, it's a fookin shambles but the arseholes who gave you all this bullshit have made a nice butty. I'd stick them all on the end of a rope.
