Don’t you think that some sort of “citizenship” course or national service, call it what you like, would be a good idea in this country?

There are lots of young people with zero respect for themselves let alone others and this just might be the best thing that anybody has suggested.. IIRC I worked with some German colleagues in the recent past who did some sort of National Service and they were all for it..

It doesn’t even need to be arms bearing, that could be optional.. the service element is the key thing, learning about respect and giving something to society.. they could use the manpower to help with community projects while giving those who take part some vital life skills…

Did you have to do it?

After the 'success' of The Big Society (which curiously involved huge cuts to charity and voluntary organisations), and the National Citizen Service, I have to say I'm a touch sceptical about the Tories commitment to deliver.

Fair point, in principle, if delivered correctly by the incoming Govt for example it could be a good thing ..

Labour are all about socialism (or where) so a project to focus minds on respect and consideration would be right up their alley..

Not Wumming btw.. I did 22 years in the military and yes, I learned to use a weapon but it taught me much much more…

The EU are not interested in substantially closer ties unless the UK signed up fully to a customs union and/or EEA membership. I would think that the recent EU election results would make them even less willing to budge.

They are a few isolated areas which need to be resolved from the actual trade deal. One relates to chemical regs, which Reeves highlighted in her FT interview. Another quite important one which Reeves surprisingly didn’t mention relates to rules of origin on electric batteries in the auto sector. The EU kicked the can down the road for a couple of years here recently but both the EU and UK would benefit from a fuller renegotiation.

Essentially though Reeves is just talking this up because she’s trying to get away from the view of her being Jeremy Hunt’s continuity candidate, presumably to boost her standing within her own party.

The EU are interested in closer ties, but, as you say, there is a price which Labour cannot afford, or are unwilling to articulate in an election campaign. It will be a gradual process. There will mobility and regulatory agreements to offset our new and costly trade barriers and eventually over time we will end up in the Single Market. Given part of our country is still in the EU single market it will always remain the sensible option.

We will, I reckon, spend two decades to go full circle and end up in a worse position than when we started. Great work by all concerned. Dumb fucks.

Not if it is against the will of those being drafted in to do it.

Germany abolished National Service in 2011. It cost billions and for no appreciable benefit. People overlook that it will cost billions.

He must fucking hate himself.

I don’t know why, but I never disliked him. I understood why others didn’t, but I never got bad vibes from him. Thought he seemed an ok bloke. And respect for landing a wife like that.

Have hated every **** that’s followed him though!
Yeah, I didn't mind Cameron myself. As you say, he destroyed his own legacy but he must've been confident of Remain winning, otherwise he wouldn't have called the referendum in the first place. He totally underestimated the influence that huge swathes of the EU-hating media had on the general public.

Despite that and subsequently being out of politics for over 7 years, he's come back and still has more clout on the world stage than that drip Sunak!

Did it teach you the military don't want thousands of people under their roof, and budget that don't want to be there for a year?
