Gianluigi Donnarumma | Done deal according to Romano

Would also add, Donnarumma is a world class goalkeeper!
That point seems to have been lost.

If this deal gets done (it is dependent on Ederson leaving imo) then it would be interesting to learn why PSG and Donnarumma fell out. They have brought in another keeper. Donnarumma's Ligue 1 form reportedly slipped as well. I am not worried about this, as his quality was evident from the CL.

IMO City need this signing for 2 reasons:

1) Ederson's level has dropped, and
2) We need experience and personality in the team. I think that's part of the reason we miss Rodri when he's not there. We used to have 4-5 world class players in our team, or at least characters like Kyle Walker, but now we have Haaland and Rodri when he is fit. Players like Nunes, Rico, Foden etc might be very good but you also need authority and we have started to miss that personality factor. Other fans started to talk about our loss of aura, or fear factor, a while ago, and I thought this was a bit of nonsense but perhaps there is something in it?

If Trafford accepted competition with Ederson, Gigi doesn’t make much difference.
But I agree this is not ok.
It's a football club. You are putting the cart in front of the horse. I know what you mean but this aspect does not bother me. If Trafford has anything about him he will look forward to training with the best and getting better. He has time on his side.

Using what logic?

  • We'll have to pay him crazy wages. PSG aren't even willing to meet his demands. PSG!!!
  • His ability on the ball is practically non existent. He is the opposite extreme to Ederson. That will require a significantly different tactical approach.
  • He makes our new £30m goalkeeper borderline redundant. We could and should have spent those funds elsewhere.
There is logic to people's concerns.

I made this point but a poster replied with a great counter. Obviously Eddie was staying a year, Donna’s age means he could easily be here 10 years. I think he’s a world class keeper so no issues getting him, but do feel sorry for Trafford, could we see him sold on for profit and we took advantage of getting him for a low fee?

I'm not so sure on this. His main weaknesses apparently are his distribution and his refusal to come for crosses.

Pep's game revolves around a group of eleven who are comfortable with the ball at its feet, and we already have a situation where premier league football has changed in the last season or two to really ramp up the importance again of corners and long throws. Lego head has already made it is number one weapon at arsenal.

I know Eddie is not always the commanding presence off his line either, whereas I think Trafford is, but I just don't think we should trade a boost to shot stopping for reduced distribute AND no improvement to control of the box.

I trust the club though, even if I am concerned with this late window flurry of activity.
10. There’s no way we can describe Haaland as comfortable on the ball. He’s got the first touch of a grooming gang.

There’s no way Trafford was signing thinking he would be number 1.
Donna is an excellent shot stopper first and foremost. Distribution skills can be worked on. How many penalties has Ederson saved? No idea but this fella will save some

I'm guessing Donnarumma Champions league Ederson Premier league Trafford FA cup and Ortega Carabao.
Should keep them all happy.
Rotating 3 keepers would be madness in my view.
How can you build an understanding between keeper and his defence if you keep changing them….unless of course you change defenders with the same keepers. That assumes defenders are never injured which lets face it is extremely unlikely given our history!
The fewre changes the better.

I just don’t see what a lot of you see with this lad:

Serie A (215 games):
15/16: 3 errors (1 goal)
16/17: 6 errors (3 goals, 1 penalty)
17/18: 8 errors (4 goals)
18/19: 3 errors (2 goals)
19/20: 7 errors (3 goals)
20/21: 2 errors (1 goal)

Ligue 1 (104 games):
21/22: 2 errors
22/23: 5 errors (3 goals, 1 penalty)
23/24: 5 errors (1 goal, 1 penalty)

Have you not noticed? Every new potential signing is met with an element of misery and scrutiny. Check the Rodrygo thread. It’s constant.
Unfortunately, there are a good few on here who are professional Dorises who, no matter what the club does, it’s “worrying” or we get flooded with pages of “I’d much rather” type whinging.

Seemingly, they forget how well the last 13 years have gone and how the club generally knows what it’s doing.

Haha, professional Doris’s. Pinching that!

I was under the assumption Ederson would stay as number 1 this season, give Trafford the cup games, then let him take over the year after assuming he's deemed good enough.

If this transfer goes ahead it feels like it essentially ends Traffords chances of playing for us. Others have said it seems unlikely that he wouldn't be aware of this ahead of joining us, which hopefully is true, but you do wonder if this has just been deemed an opportunity to get one of the highest rated goalies in their peak to join rather than a long-term plan.

Oddly enough, if Donnarumma happens, I think there's wider context to consider:

A) Guardiola is definitely moving on after this contract and not changing his mind, last minute again

therefore

B) A definite change of footballing philosophy after Guardiola leaves.

As good as Donnarumma is, he's not as good with his feet as Ederson, who's not as good with his hands, but has had the shirt.

Unless, of course, Guardiola is going attack heavy and hoping we don't really need the keeper to come and bail us, so feet is not as important as it used to be?

Defo something in that Marv, we arent feared any longer and it would appear that Viana has noticed that and doesnt just want possible in 3-5 years world class players but world class winners now still with 4-5 years in them with us?
