Helen the bell ringer

Only read the first few pages of this (it's late and I'm off to bed) but, as others have said early on in the thread, Helen was a Maine Road legend who never got to see the CoMs (I dont think).

It would be fitting, and symbolic, if - at an appropiate moment in the near-future such as the following home fixture after winning our first trophy in the modern era - the club organized for a relative of Helens to sit at the front and ring a similar bell.
We dont get informed about this and it clatters just for twenty seconds or so and no more.
I'll be honest....I'd get shivers to my boots! In a very good way. It would simultaneously be like a blast from the past whilst also a symbolic ringing in of the new era ahead.

Edit - Just read back a few pages and seen this has already been suggested. It would be a fantastic tribute to a fantastic blue.

She was a wonderful woman, a real gem.

Many of us older fans probably have memories of her, she had a smile on her face, and woe betide anyone who upset her!

I was fortunate to travel with her on Finglands coaches to away games in the 70's, and she was in charge, of that there is no doubt.

I recall a trip to Derby when a couple of lads were late getting back to the coach. The driver wanted to set off, but she was having none of it, and that coach stayed in the car park until the two lads got on board.

It wasn't a long wait, but she knew how many people were on board, she had counted us out, and she counted us all back in.

If you were a City fan, she looked after you.

She died in September 2005 and I'm fairly sure she attended a few games at Eastlands in her wheelchair.

She lived near The Kings Arms pub in Chorlton On Medlock near me. She sold flowers at the entrance to Manchester Royal Infirmary.

She was a very down to earth true blue.

She was a tough character with a heart of gold.

Not sure why but my most vivid memory of Helen was at a pre season friendly at Morecambe some time late 70's. City had a good turn out for such a game and plenty were playing up during the game, at half time an impromptu kickabout ensued between about 50 blues on the pitch, trouble was it continued when the players came back out for the 2nd half, nobody seemed interested in stopping to let the game resume. There were only a couple of police and they were powerless.

Helen took it upon herself to clear the invaders from the pitch, she was marching round trying to clip as many lads as she could, she did the job, not sure how, I think there was respect for her even from the rum lads, you never knew if you were going to be lumbered with her on coach A for an away game, she ruled that coach with an iron fist but as others have pointed out she looked out for everyone and wasn't frightened of anyone.

Anyone else remember that Morcambe game, proper sunny day it was, good weekend away as it happens.

RIP Helen, fondly remembered by many, not only City supporters either, she did so much for so many, a truly good soul.

I think this is a more fitting picture.

My first game at Maine Road, stood in the Kippax, I hear this bell ringing and ask my bro what thats all about. Loved Helen from that moment onwards. I can't think of another club who has, or will have, a more well known fan who every club recognises.
