Any chance of a lift ? I love it down there but I personally find the village /harbour places far too busy in the summer. Especially places like Brixham and Padstow. Croyde is a cracking place but it doesn't fit your requirements. Perranporth has a cracking beach and a small town with a few pubs . It has a great chippy/ butcher and wetherspoons

depends if you’re camping / have own van or having to get digs . Cornwall is nicer to stay but really expensive . As per other poster perranporth is a nice part of Cornwall near to Newquay . Nice walks from Holywell bay going either way along the coast . Polzeath walk to rock then going on the little ferry to Padstow for a few beers is ideal ( pooch can go on ferry no probs ) . St ives is stunning on a hot day but gets crowded and has dive bombing seagulls

Pendine is nice Sadders -there’s a new motor museum there where they used to attempt the land speed records.
Nice beach if the weather holds and places to eat.
Carew and Pembroke castles are worth visiting too.

I'm doing a bit of air bnb and camping, head first to Stratford Upon Avon, then onto Bath then onto Devon or Cornwall, ideally Devon as its not as far (with our dog) then on the return leg, Salisbury and Oxford

Some lovely resorts on the Dorset/Devon border Lyme Regis (great pubs and restaurants to suit all pockets and all walkable), Nearby Charmouth and little Seatown - with Axmouth/Seaton, Beer and Sidmouth in the other direction over in Devon. All these resorts fairly easy reach of Salisbury. The beauty of these places is you avoid the worst of the ridiculous traffic as you get towards Cornwall. As for Clovelly on the North Devon coast, it’s lovely but a very steep hill with a pub in the Harbour and one halfway down the hill. You have to leave your car at the top. It’s a climb !
We love Lyme, it’s a classy but unpretentious resort in an unspoiled old English seaside sort of way. Very friendly locals. But lots of lovely places in the South West.

Thanks for that Lyme Regis looks beautiful, any other tips on Lyme as definitely interested going there.

Over Summer, there’s lots of things going on in the town. Sausage & Cider Festival, Lifeboat week etc. There’s a little theatre with a nice bar. A micro brewery in the Town Mill complex. Lovely little coffee shop with free deck chairs on the beach. Loads of seating all along the seafront which is completely traffic free - great for families and dogs. Beach huts for hire (scarce in high season). Sea fishing trips. little high street full of independent shops, cafes (cracking second hand book shop) All the restaurants and pubs you could wish for - as well as Indian, Italian, Thai - from good pub fare to Gourmet. It’s definitely a boozy place but with a nice friendly atmosphere - never seen any trouble or any gangs of pissed up young lads etc. People-watching sat on the little terrace at the Harbour Inn (or the Cobb Arms, Royal Standard or Swim) at one end of town or the Pilot Boat, Rock Point or Lyme Bay at the other end. 2 miles down the Road in Charmouth is the superb Royal Oak. The Volunteer, the Ship Inn and the Town Mill complex in the middle. Great chippies and Chinese take-away that delivers.
Cons : Not essential but always worth booking a table to eat. Book long stay tickets for parking but you don’t need a car to get around the town + plus a good bus service up and down the coast. A bit hilly when you head inland.
As you can tell, we love the place…as do grown-up children and grandchildren.

Head towards woolacombe for the huge stretch of sandy beaches, as you’re mobile as another poster

head towards woolacoombe in north Devon for the huge stretches of golden sand beaches . As another poster recommended croyde is lovely and only around the corner . It will save you 2 hours of traffic as you rightly pointed out with the Cornish traffic .

Are they still doing the conger cuddling thing? Many years since I have been there but the kids found that quite amusing.
