Houssem Aouar

Gundogan is brilliant in the deeper six role, definitely not in the 8.

not against the best he isnt - he leaves us so exposed time after time.

Against average prem opponents where we have huge chunks of possession we are ok with him there but against anyone top class with him there you might as well play no one.

He isn’t going to be first choice there so it isn’t an issue really. He also looked very good there with Bernardo a bit deeper alongside him giving KDB a free role ahead of them.

I disagree mate. Post Xmas last year in that role he was absolutely top top class. Yet to let us down in that role for me.

the 2 Matches against Tottenham last year, we were super exposed.

At Home in the CL (fern only played last 30')
At Home in the PL (Fern came in 37' min but he was injured from the CL first leg still)

during the 14 Win streak We were Super tight defensively. Playing with Inverted Wingers But almost never having either of the full backs push up.

contrary to Normal Pep we were prioritizing defense first during that streak. 3 goals against in 14 games.

We were linked to him in April/May but this deal seems dead. If we were close to signing him then surely there would be reports coming from France?

Don't think we'll sign him.

Rangers played Lyon in friendly games and their coaching staff were gushing in their praise of Aouar and the defensive midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. The Italian papers are linking Aouar with a move to Italy, but that might just be a bit of devilment ahead of OL’s game against Juventus.

Any updates with this or was it all just paper talk?

Nothing will happen until Lyon exit the Champions League. They go to Turin a goal to the good, so it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that they actually progress, so there may yet be a delay. In the Italian press, Juventus were reported as being interested in signing him, but they have cooled in recent weeks. In the French press, he has been linked repeatedly with us and also Tottenham, (yes really, that Tottenham), but the Tottenham link seems to owe more to Ndombele having already beaten that path. We are clearly seen there as the front runners for his signature.

We don’t leak anything to the English media and respect the other clubs, so I don’t expect to read anything from there, but I can see a pattern developing with our dealings this year. We’ve taken Ake from a team that was relegated, Torres from a team that missed out on European football completely, and we’re in line to sign Koulibaly from Napoli and Aouar from Lyon. After years of Champions League football, both clubs are now set to miss out on that next season- unless of course they win the trophy- so they will be in a much weaker position to keep the player. Indeed Lyon missed out on European football entirely. See that prospect against the background of the pandemic and their positions are even worse.

Could be wrong, of course, but I’ve at least put my workings in the margin. ;-)

I am not ITK but I read around various other sites and this may happen in a couple of weeks. No idea how credible the information is or from what source (could be the friend of a friend etc) No doubt some wumming, but you never know. :-)
