Howard Webb

I couldn't agree more.
My other bugbear is "there was definite contact, there".
I should hope so. It's a contact sport!

In last night's instance, it was penalty; not because there was contact but because he actually denied Aguero a clear goal-scoring opportunity.
However, they've also invented this imaginary 'last man back' rule that apparently must be a factor, too.

(Incidentally, I don't agree with a straight red for the denial of a clear goal scoring opportunity. Three punishments for one offence is silly. A yellow card and allow a penalty goal (like a penalty try on rugby) is plenty of retribution).

Agree especially on the last bit. Always a bit of a laugh to see a player sent off but its in the interest of the game to keep 11 v 11 if at all possible and only violent conduct should be seeing players walk.

The red card for the denial of a scoring opportunity originally came in just for fouls outside the box. After Willie Young cynically hacked down Paul Allan on the edge of the box in the FA Cup final. It seemed a suitable punishment for the type of offense, players were committing professional fouls just outside the penalty area all of the time. it was the extension of the punishment to fouls inside the box that didn't make sense.

This^^ It's now unofficial policy in some European leagues not to award the red inside the box unless it's for something like a handball on the line.

Sorry to be pedantic but he didn't deny Aguero a clear goal scoring opportunity.

There's only one question the ref needs to ask himself which is was it a foul or not? In this instance he called it wrong.

Webb trying his best to justify why the ref didn't give it...(sticking together); he says there WAS contact, but not enough to give a pen !!!!!????? and as another poster pointed out, look at Kasper, he shit his self.

Webb got it wrong. He knows he got it wrong but rather than say that he initially got it wrong, he continues to dig himself a hole to avoid recognising the obvious! This is the calibre of referee currently shafting fans up and down the nation.

Watching the game again and it is frightening how many poor decisions Pawson made. It will be interesting what game he gets next if any.

Watch the game we next get with Atkinson and see the yellows we get yet he hardly booked the rags for diving and yellow offences. As for Webb i remember the rags being 3 down at Chelsea and he gave them 2 of the softest penalties i have ever seen. No surprise he retired shortly after Ferguson
