Ice Hockey | Player arrested for manslaughter following death of Adam Johnson (P18)

That’s true, but I think our usual suspect thinks he’s written the laws and knows exactly what and what doesn’t apply.

I can see the snide side that drove a long-term poster mad to the point of quitting tbh.

It wasn't a personal slight at you but you admitted you hadn't seen the clip, so not sure why you were debating when in the dark.

The very act of trying to block a player with a leg is a foul. USA rule books class a leg check as a reckless endangerment and immediate sending off from the match.

Case 5 in this list.

So even if he had done this, its malicious in terms of Hockey rules. Im not suggesting he tried to hurt the guy. but the manouver, if it is what( im still not convinved with the bad video quality ) would have ( should have ) been a major penalty and sending off.
Which is all fine. Does being a sending off offence mean he’s guilty?

Maybe it does. I’m not a judge.

I’ve watched the clip up until the point of contact.

Feel free to follow the long term poster’s lead.

The debate was all cordial in here until you popped up today and turned it up to 11.

As usual you seem to have a problem accepting your own responsibility.

You didn't say you watched it until contact until you were asked for clarification, you said you'd read that his head was 4 feet off the ground. It's normal for anyone to wonder why you felt the need to argue.

I didn't make any personal remarks to you first and the fact that you chose to get snide reveals more about you than anyone else.

Ok Mate. That’s not true, but I can’t be arsed debating with you anymore.

Forgive me in not caring about your character assessment.

You do realise what he is, or rather isn't, arguing, right?

Speaking as someone that has watched hockey for the past 45 years and grew up with a lot of my friends playing hockey, You can't tell shit from that video clip.

Quoting for truth. it Looks bad in the video but its so bad you cant even tell what foot hit Johnson in reality.

Well at least nobody called anybody too woke, a snowflake, blamed cancel culture or the Tories, so that's something!

Nasty player

Not much wrong with that, hardly 'nasty', a normal part of the game.

Reading a lot of the responses on this, I think part of the issue is that people are basing their views on a comparison to football and ice hockey is a very different animal.

I can’t get my better half, brought up on a diet of ice hockey and box lacrosse, to show any interest in football. On the occasions she has watched, there's always the usual rolling of eyes and smirking as she watches big strong grown men get ‘knocked over’ and roll around at the slightest of touches………………..a point I can’t defend.

Her son plays professional lacrosse in both the NLL and MSL and the physicality of that wouldn't even compare to football. Besides the physical style of the game, on occasions they’re not frightened to drop the gloves and trade punches until the refs decide it’s enough and intervene. There have been times when he's been sent out to purposely start a fight with a particular player for 'tactical' reasons. Can't say I agree with that side of things, but it's the way it's played and part of the game.

Now, I’m not saying that it should transfer to the football pitch or go back to the Norman Hunter days, but football is now a pussies game with regard to being a contact sport, so to criticize the hockey challenges is not an accurate response to ice hockey and this accident.

In my view this was purely an unfortunate accident. The game may be physical, but the players will use fists before a weapon like their skates.

The angle, strength and speed of the challenge is what sent the leg and skate in the height and direction it did and it was just unfortunate that the consequences were what they were. Petgrave may be aggressive in style, but I don't believe there was any malicious intent over and above being an enforcer type player.

Apart from the top 3 divisions (Elite National and N&S1) the rest of Ice Hockey is development or age group and only minimal force is allowed here when checking.

Watch a division 2 North game and you will see a massive difference in what is permitted. You can't generalise based on one league.

I don't quite get the point you're trying to make Corky.

There is also a massive difference between what's allowed at the different levels/ages here as well. I'm only referring to the highest levels, either here or over there.

The correct verdict.

At the time, I discussed this with some guys who played hockey at a high level over here and all were of the view that it was accidental and as tragic as it was, it was simply bad luck.

Another big win for the true crime conspiracy nuts who see cases like this as a beacon for their amateur detective skills and a chance to feed their insatiable appetite to intrude on very sensitive and difficult topics. File it alongside "Nicola Bulley was murdered by her husband" in the BIG WINS folder. Ah, wait.

This.
