Ireland Leaving - Absolute Disaster

Chelsea have Lampard.
Arsenal have Fabregas.
United have Fletcher.
Liverpool have Gerrard.
Spurs have Modric.
Aston Villa have Milner.

City have Ireland, as their only box-to-box midfielder. There are better players than Stephen Ireland. The likes of Hamsik, Banega and maybe even Messi will be easily accesable with our funds, so why not bid for better players?

Please don't.
Please explain what you don't want me to do?
Whether you like to hear it or not, there are better players than Ireland.

Oops! Didn't see Messi in bold!!

would be a huge mistake to let him go

he needs to be playing

he is off form at present but we all know that he is absolute quality and there is no better passer of the ball at the club.

If mancini allows this to happen he is a fool!

I think "Absolute Disaster" may be over stating things a little too.

Only a little ?

Yeah, how dare a City supporter react with emotion and passion to the idea of last seasons player of the season moving to one of our rivals...;- )

I don't think he will be leaving. I'm always very sceptic of the "my mate in the pub told me" esque rumours. He has signed a new deal, and if we achieve Top 4 at the expense of Liverpool, would he really want to take a step down? I can't see Arsenal going for him, even if Fabregas leaves. We'll expect a big fee for him, and Wenger doesn't really spend big, and United seems too unlikely. If Chelsea wanted a new central midfielder, I doubt they will target Ireland, who hasn't put himself in the shop window for a big move this season.

I meant don't say things like us getting Messi. The other 2 you mentioned, fair enough. There are certain players money can't buy, Messi is top of the pile. Messi plays for argueably the best and biggest club in the world. He will start every game automatically, regardless of who is in charge. Currently only united would be able to get his mind thinking of a move, and even that is debatable. There is no reason why Messi would leave the biggest club to come to us or anyone else other than united for that matter, but like I say its debatable why he'd even go there, but at least they have the trophies and similar size of club to offer. Messi coming to us would be like Tevez going to Doncaster Rovers. I know some blues don't like hearing things like this, but its just the way it is. Barca are more than a club, they're an establishment and offer more than just signing for a football club, and until we have had years, perhaps decades of continuous success and history, we will only be perceived as 'signing for another club' in the eyes of players of Messi's current stature in the game.

If it meant better players coming in, then so be it. Ultimately I wouldn't be too disappointed if someone like Hamsik came in.

That said, Ireland is tremendously talented. I hope he can just write this season off as one that never got going, and come back stronger next year. I think he would agree that he has been off the boil this year, and hasn't really given Mancini much of a chocie in terms of team selection. The Ireland of last year would definitely be in the side so it's down to him to rekindle that kind of form.

City fans are consistent in one thing, over reacting, you only need look on here, win lose or draw.

Can't say I'll be happy IF it happens, I've seen lots of other players I liked leave, but its not an "absolute disaster", is it ?

On his current form its not even a minor setback in playing terms.

maybe we should start another thread, because this went tits up the moment DD pressed 'post'. he's entitled to his views, but negativity and hostility breeds more of the same.

the new one could be about how much we were willing Steven to succeed.

how much we hoped that he was determined to make his mark here.

how we knew he hadn't been at his best, but we know that there is a lot of competition, there has been a lot of change, uncertainty, pressure.

how we desperately hoped that he was determined to make the most of his chances, to stick it out and make his career here...

if he could adapt and show he could contribute in a number of positions at the highest level, or find a new role for himself, I would fawn in admiration at him all over again. even seizing whatever chances he gets from now until the summer... just a couple of performances where he showed the flame was still there....I know it would mean a lot to a great many fans.

even if he just stuck it out this summer, more opportunities will come around next year. it would mean something even if, at the end of next season, he decided that he needed to move.

how about it?

I'm sure you'd get some real support for the lad.
