It's Quiet - a new dawn

Good point mate....My issue will be if we spend another summer spending big on forwards and neglect the fullback position again. Most fans at the start of the season could have told you the fullback position and CM were going to cost us points this season and thats what has happened. The holes the fullbacks have left at the back while trying to play Pep's system, is half the reason for all the mistakes we see. We've been stuck with 4 over 30 fullbacks that just dont fit his style of play. I believe the long term transfer plan for the fullback position has been poor and should have been better managed, ready for Pep's arrival. This summer we have no excuses for not fixing the problem! ; ) Should be a fun summer...

Yeah I wouldn't be worried about that. We are obviously buying a RB and a LB this summer. I personally only think we need 1 of each. But what we do for the attack has no bearing on our defense purchases IMO.

what we do in attack is part of the defence and one of peps biggest things after possession.
its why he will play jesus over aguero.,we defend from the front all the way to the back, press press press

Only more bullshit about the shitty rags on the BBC football gossip page this morning. They're getting as bad as the tabloids for rag arse licking.

How come there's seldom any rumours about us signing Sanchez, Griezmann, et al? They're even linking Liverpool with a £50m move for van Dijk, yet I though we were interested in him?

It annoys me because it's about the perception of our club in the broader public eye. If we're constantly linked with the big signings it seeps into the neutral fans' mindset that we are a top club who can outspend the rags. It's also good for prestige, commercial value, etc to have the top of the tree image.

I actually liked that chubby guy who acted as a mouthpiece for us a couple of days after the takeover! Talking about Ronaldo, Messi, everyone. Though he was swiftly moved on wasn't he!

To be fair the bbc gossip page just repeats whats on the back of the tabloids, and our club dont want to be on the back of the tabloids. The tubby guy was moved on because he was an embarrasment.

Do you think we have actually told the press not to make up rumours, or do they still have this old fashioned mindset that we're not as big as Liverpool, rags or Chelsea so less interesting to write stories about?

Strange though, if it's a negative story we suddenly make their back pages in huge headlines. But they steadfastly refuse to run with 'City to splash out on Sanchez, Griezmann AND Mbappe' or similar.

The tabloids are 90% rag propaganda aren't they, even to this day when they're battling for 5th or 6th and playing on Thursday nights.

We need another couple of seasons of them doing nothing and being out the top 4.

City don't want those kinds of headlines anyway, they want to cultivate a different image to "moneybags" City.

Based almost entirely on interent clicks and yes we dont get as many. Saw a thing on f365 , talking about City not getting credit, were they said they said they know if they put a City story at the top of their site they get a lot less clicks. Personally dont care they will take notice wwhen the real deals are done.

Ended up at Portsmouth in the end iirc, be careful what you wish for.

You've seamlessly switched your rant from "the rags at the bbc" to the media. The bbc, as stated, get their gossip column from the gossip in the papers.

In fairness we can infer Pep's thinking here. If he didn't think they' were okay, we can assume he'd have done something about it. That for me is a fair inference to make. That said, I think fullbacks at best ranks 3rd or 4th on the list if things that have caused us to fade in the league. Goalkeeper, poor finishing, injuries, all superseding fullback. So I still don't get Rammy's rant :)

In fairness, I will give you a serious answer but my comment to Rammy was slightly tongue in cheek.

I know why Rammy is upset. I posted on this forum after we played Barca under Pellegrini that much as I'd love Messi off of them, if we'd had Alves, Alba and Busquets, we'd be a massively improved side. We are still looking for the equivalent of those three. Not checked Alba's age but I would probably still want to nab him for City.

Of course, we can infer that Pep was prepared to go into this season with those full backs and we can attempt to infer some of the reasoning; which other posters have done. We can go further and infer that in the most recent Pep book, the player he states that everyone thinks he will ge rid of but that he sees something in is Kolarov.

We can all see that Clichy has had a relatively poor season and there's probably a case to say you could see his form start to decline last year but I contend it was not Pep dropping a massive bollock thinking he could get enough out of Clichy for this season while waiting for his contract situation to resolve itself...

You seem to know your stats, so you may be aware that by statiscal measures, Clichy was, over an extended period, the most consistent performer among the league's defenders and the next defender on that list was Kolarov. I don't recall who was ahead of them on the list but it was a selection of what most objective folk would accept as the league's best players, our friend Mr Lampard being one of them.

So, yes, we should have replaced some of our full backs by now but there's a host of reasons why it didn't happen last summer rather than Pep all on his own screwing up.

I hope sooner rather than later we can change that mindset of us generating less interest.

Listening to Talkshite in the car this morning, and one of them (ex pro, not sure of his name though) said that he knows for a fact that we've been talking to a right back, and if we do the deal it will be big news and he'll definitely improve us. Anyone got any ideas of who it might be?

Steven Hawkins would improve our right back position...
