But some on here were sneering at Sheffield's footballing style and saying he would not learn anything.

Championship sides who are in the promotion mix are the ideal destinations for our loanees. Once the play-offs and relegation are done we need to be trying to place our lads at teams like Blackburn, Swansea etc.

Yep,i was one of them,so what?

It was very much justified criticism initially,as it just wasnt working out for either party.Fair play though,it took a bit of time.....as James adapted to the physicality and the Blades learnt how to use his presence and technical ability.

I'm very happy to hold my hands up and say,from what i was watching in his early days there,i didn't see that coming.

He now needs a Prem club.

Exactly, we all saw how shit them first few games were, Sheff Utd were just bypassing midfield everytime. Looks like they both adjusted to each other and reaped the benefits.
 
Hypothetically, what would we value more in terms of his development, 2,209 minutes of playing at a team in the bottom half of the Premier League and only in domestic competitions (let’s say on loan to Bournemouth) or 1,515 minutes of playing with us across all competitions, both domestic and European.

The 2,209 minutes is the figure Lavia has accumulated with Southampton - and yes I know he missed out through injury, though he is also predominantly a defensive player so would be more likely to feature than an attacking player - while the 1,515 minutes is the figure Lewis has accumulated with us this season.

As I say, all hypothetical, but in McAtee’s case I think I’d be valuing quality over quantity.

For me it would be Lewis's game time which is at a higher level and even when not playing he's watching and also training with top level players.

I think that this season has largely been great for many of our loanees and a big improvement on previous seasons. City players played significant minutes for the top two teams in the Championship which should make getting loan moves for other City players easier next year.

McAtee also surprised me with how well he has done and it was great that the Sheffield United management persevered with him after his less than amazing start.

I think placing our loanees in competitive teams who will give them decent chances to play is probably more important than the style in which those teams play.

I also think Delap's season following on the heels of Doyle's experiences at Hamburg last season show that the players (or their agents) should not be involved in selecting clubs to go on loan to.

Re. McAtee I think if he could be loaned to a Prem club that would play him that would be great but being a starter for a Championship team competing for promotion would be better for his development than being a bench warmer in the top flight.

Do you think that he is ready to be a starter for a prem team? - if yes which clubs could you see maybe taking him on loan?

He is in a bit of a no man's land situation,probably too good for Championship but lacking the experience to start in the Prem.
I think his best move would be a promoted side,where he will hopefully get a fair few opportunities and get a feel for this league.
Coming back here and being stuck on our bench,at best,will be the worst scenario.

I'm no expert in football development, but it seems to me if a player has done well at a loan club and they get promoted to the Premier League with him as an integral part, it'd make more sense to let him play regularly in the PL rather than come back to get a handful of cup games and sub appearances. A lot of loans don't work out, but this one has clearly been a big success and there's no risk of him stagnating at that level, because they've gone up a level.
