January defenders

Whats the argument for not just paying Ruben Dias' release clause in January when our two nominal centerbacks are benched behind a 34 year old who's never played the position before this season and our other DM who's playing there for the second time?

Id bin Otamendi in January and bring Dias in

I would like to see him but don't we need to free up an foriegn slot before we can bring someone else in, maybe we let Sane go to Bayern?

Taylor Harwood-Bellis could be ready within 18 months - he’s simply that special. With him in mind, we shouldn’t be be spending huge money on anyone young like Dias or Soyuncu; I’d get Alderweireld, who’s an upgrade on Stones and Otamendi, and will be available cheap in January given the fact his contract expires in the summer.

Skriniar might be viable, as he’s seemingly struggling to adjust to Conte’s 3 man central defence; they might want to recycle him into system-compatible player(s)....but again he’s young and would be a long-term obstacle for THB and Garcia.

Another defender we should sign is Nathan Ferguson; West Brom kid who’s now developing in the fullback positions having spent most of his youth career as a very highly rated central defender. Spurs, Juventus and Atletico are apparently drafting bids. Walker will need replacing soon, so it’d make sense to sign him in January and loan him out for 18 months, rather than waiting for someone else to buy and develop him, then end up paying £50m further down the line.

Why would buying someone block Harwood-Bellis? Beyond Laporte we have a 34 year old, a guy who wanted to leave last summer and probably will leave this summer in Otamendi, and Stones, who the moment has more than a few question marks over his head. Bellis is 17 years old, we can easily buy someone without worrying about him being blocked. Garcia is likely a different story though.

I really liked the look of Nathan Ake in the Bournemouth game earlier this season and can see him fitting straight into our defence. Think we were linked with him at the back end of the last transfer window but nothing came of it. Seems that Chelsea are now looking to resign him.
