Look at it this way, when Zaba came here he did the simple things and covered his arse and laid it off when he got the ball. He was good, but not influential. As he adjusted to the PL he improved more and tried a few things. He improved but kept getting caught out and put stupid challenges in, in stupid places and gave free kicks away in dangerous places. He played many positions and gave 100%. Competing with Richards for RB stopped him progressing. Since Richards's injury he's continued to apply himself and is putting in FA cup final performances every week.
Javi Garcia started off playing in a restricted role, breaking up play and giving it to Yaya. With the exception of some headed goals that's all he's done. He hasn't had a run in the team to get up to the pace of the PL and wasn't doing particularly well (lower performance levels than Zaba when he started). He's had to feed off scraps of games but then started to improve. However he's still been doing the simple stuff- get the ball and give it to Yaya. He's not done anything wrong in the last few games, just done what he was told. Today marked a departure. With Yaya off to the ACON he's had to work with Barry, Milner & Silva to cover the middle of the field and make sure that the ball comes back to a blue shirt all over the pitch, not just screening for the back 4. He paced himself and was one of the liveliest players in a blue shirt at the end of the game. Well done Javi, you took your opportunity today. May we see you improve more as you should get game time during this ACON period. Look to Zaba to see what can be achieved, your improvement is slowly beginning to mirror the Iron Man's time at The Etihad. You've got a way to go but you're going in the right direction.
