Perhaps we have deliberately set ourselves up to fail on this and/or Pogba transfers to create a new tougher negotiating image. Stick to our guns, will not go beyond our valuation. Walk away on a couple of high profile signings and we reboot our new transfer approach.... Perhaps!

would be tough to miss out on both our top CB targets but would understand if the reports last are true. "IF" this is how it plays out(and I say If because it would seem we still waiting to see who blinks first) and no Stones, No Laporte, No Bonucci...we got a plan D? Clearly Pep has been concerned about the CB position since he arrived.

End of the day, I think Stones will still be a blue.
 
There will be some great unknown defenders out there smaller teams are going to pick up for a few mill. It would be nice if we could get one of these every now and then. I would rather punt ten mill than punt £35-40 mill like we have done.

Stones will be a real gamble but figure if we really want him then the starting price for any players seems to be thirty mill nowadays. We will end up paying what they want, even if it is dressed up as add ons.

Quite. These aren't the Olden Days. Everton aren't anyone's poor relations any more. Hardly any premiership club is.

The days of treating players like hand me downs are long gone.
 
Some good points from those that think we should pay the asking price but there is still a problem with that train of thought I think; namely where is the line?

If Everton ask 60k is that ok? How about 160k?

For those that say it's up to City well that's fine but it's not the same as saying just pay what Everton ask.
 
I don't agree with the idea that a few million more doesn't matter. It all depends on on the player IMO. For example Aguero was a bargain whereas Bony was over priced. Had Aguero failed to settle and Bony continued his previous form it'd be the opposite. It's like stocks...decisions are only right or wrong in hindsight.

Any money saved can be used elsewhere in the club either making things better or less worse (less pandering to sponsors). So the money is important.

I don't think Stones is much good but I still hope the signing happens. Like a kid who wants a toy every time I'm brought to town even if I have no idea what I want. :-)

If a player's heart is not in it, it's a stupid strategy to play tough, especially if you mis-read your opponent as their performance will dip and it affects the team. All the players, not just Stones will know the situation. Pricing a player out of our transfer when he has twice requested a move is not going to go down well. You have some duty towards the player after he's given you 12 months. Fair enough if City were trying to take advantage but at £40m plus that's really not the case.

I disagree that his value will be retained. In 12 months time, he will be in to the last 2 years of his contract, not a good situation for a selling club, and I think Stones's game will also be affected by this dispute. It's got to mess with your head.

Kenwright has backed himself into a corner now. It will be difficult to replace him now without themselves having to pay way over the odds, so I don't see their strategy changing. In that sense they are likely to stick to their guns, but I don't think it's that clever.

How about using Bony and Denayer in the Stones deal given that chelsea want Lakaku and Everton will need to replace Stones

If we bought a CB for £4m from some Croatian team, 4/5ths of this forum would top themselves.
 
Everton were said to have turned down £40M from Chelsea last year since when prices have gone up because of the TV money and Everton have apparently got richer owners. I can't see the fee being much less than £50M if one is agreed, whether or not he is worth the money only time will tell. We've certainly shelled out big money for center halfs in the past from Lescott to Mangala.
