I imagine Pep wants an Otamendi replacement - a more combative option to supplement a refined partner that we’ve lacked since Kompany’s departure/Ota’s decline.
What’s interesting to me is that the club has signed a left sided utility defender in Ake, and also primarily targeted another defender who plays almost exclusively on the left in Koulibaly - perhaps they know Laporte is crocked, and are either preemptively covering for his absence, or perhaps even decline and departure.
Buy Koulibaly, swap Gimenez for Laporte?
Both Gimenez and KK are right footed we won’t be getting both and no suggestion we will sell Laporte we could play a back three with Ake Laporte and new CB we could play Ake as back up LCB we could play him as a LB and we could play him as CDM Don’t think we are expect to have a problem with Laporte but you can never be sure what will happen after injuries

People who really think he's better than KK are under mining the effect Simeone's tactics have on defensive players. KK would be a beast in Atleti's backline. Having said that, Giminez is a quality CB who's highly prone to niggling muscle injuries. So we should stay clear, especially at that price.

I have to admit I’ve hardly seen either player. In a vacuum, and at that price, both have a big question mark. If KK is clearly the superior player, it might be one signing where we take a short term view to plug an obvious gap. Why? Gimenez is 25, Koulibaly is 29. They are both top defenders
